SFU Wrestling Strong in Season Opener

BURNABY, BC. - Simon Fraser University Wrestling opened the 2001-02 season in Calgary over the weekend with the joint Clan-Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club finishing in first place in the men's competition and second in the women's. The Clan-BMWC men put together a total of 70 team points to take top spot by 28 points over the University of Saskatchewan-Sask Wrestling Club team in the Men's Club division of the University of Calgary Invitational. Leading the way for the Clan was Danny Einhorn (Jr, 174lbs, Toronto ON) who finished in first place in the 78kg weight division. Alexis Roumanis (Fr-RS, Port Alberni BC) also had a strong meet placing second in the 63kg class, losing out to BMWC teammate Jessie Saunders in the final. The joint women's team placed in second place just four points behind UCWC-University of Calgary counting 36 points. Carol Huynh (Jr, Hazleton BC) beat BMWC teammate Sarah White in the final of the 50kg division to take the title. Ashela McManus (Fr, Port Alberni BC) was beaten by BMWC teammate Ashley Buchanan at 72kg taking home the silver medal, while Shannon Briginshaw (Fr, Toronto ON) placed third in the 55kg class along with Angela Mah (Fr, Smithers BC) in the 59kg division. "This was a good start for us early in the season" said Head Wrestling Coach Mike Jones. "Now we know what we have to work on". Jones says he was please with some of the individual performances of his athletes. "Danny wrestled well to take first place, as did Alexis in picking up a second place". In looking at the women's performances Jones feels Carol Huynh is rounding into top form, "she was injured a bit this weekend, but looks to be recovering well and should be ready for worlds". SFU's top wrestlers were competing in the Sunkist International in Phoenix Arizona over the weekend producing some top finish. 2001 NAIA National Champion Neal Ewers (Sr, Toronto ON) finished 4th in a very tough weight class which included Olympic Champion and teammate Daniel Igali who pinned his opponent in the final to take first place (Igali beat Ewers in the semi-finals). Lindsay Belisle, who competes for the BMWC is in top form heading into Worlds as she took first place in her weight class against the best in the world in Phoenix SFU hosts the Clansmen International Wrestling Tournament November 9th-10th.
