Jason Loukides to Compete at the Greco-Roman World Championships for the United States at 213.75 pounds 2000 Olympic Bronze Medalist Garrett Lowney (Appleton, Wis./Minnesota Storm) will not compete in the 2001 World Championships set for Dec. 6-9 in Athens, Greece due to his collegiate obligations. Jason Loukides (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) who finished second to Lowney at the 2001 World Team Trials will fill the spot at 213.75 pounds and compete in his first World Championships. The World Championships were originally set for Sept. 26-29 in New York City at Madison Square Garden, but due to the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States and the current international situation, the competition site and date has been changed. In a press release released by the University of Minnesota, Lowney said, "I have priorities with both USA Wrestling and the University of Minnesota, but I need to keep those priorities separate," Lowney said. "It's not possible to meet my goals of a winning a World Championship and a NCAA title by doing both part-time. It's unfortunate that the rescheduled World Championships is in conflict with the University of Minnesota season, but, for now, my focus is on winning a national championship with the Gophers." U.S. National Coach Steve Fraser of Colorado Spring, Colo. is disappointed that Lowney will not be competing, but is looking forward to getting Loukides ready. "Unfortunately Garrett is not going to the 2001 World Championships in December," said Fraser. "I hope he or J Robinson or the Univ. of Minnesota do not regret their decision. I am very disappointed that he is not going because not only does Garrett have a great opportunity to medal for the U.S. again, the experience he would get at the world championships would vastly enhance his NCAA performance." Fraser and the rest of the coaching staff will now focus on getting another wrestler ready for the competition. "I have all the confidence that Jason Loukides can fill the spot honorably," said Fraser. "I'm excited about working with Jason to get him ready to represent our country the way I know he can. Although Jason doesn't have a lot of international experience, he's a very talented and hard working individual that will represent our team well. Jason is going to the World Cup in Levallois, France Nov. 3-4, which will help in his preparation for the World Championships." Loukides is currently out of the country and is unavailable for comment.
