Practice on Wednesday started a full half-hour late for the World Team members. After weeks of waiting to hear the fate of the World Championships, the #1's gathered to hear the news from the FILA meeting in Switzerland. Head National Coach Kevin Jackson and Assistant World Team Coach Zeke Jones explained to the athletes that the Worlds for Freestyle would be held in Sofia, Bulgaria Nov. 22-25th. Prior to the meeting, it seemed most wrestlers had come to terms with idea that the Worlds would probably no longer be in the U.S. With the news from the national office, the wrestlers finally had a date and destination to focus on. From there, the coaches asked for input from the wrestlers regarding the 39 days till weigh-ins. The coaches involved with the chase for the World Team Title will quickly gather input and then come up with a new training regimen for the eight World Team members. Although the new training schedule is far from concrete, Zeke Jones offered the possibility that the athletes might go through three short micro cycles with one aimed at acclimation in Europe. "We still have a tremendous team, that has impressed me throughout the summer with their hard work and focus. We will be ready for the World Championships, said Jones. National Coach Kevin Jackson agreed with Jones' assessment of the cycles before the trip to Bulgaria. "Times and locations for training the camps are still up in the air at this point. I'm going to gather a lot of input quickly before we set our training. We may have a short cycle in conjunction with the Sunkist Tournament in Arizona at the end of the month. We will formulate a plan and get it to the athletes as quickly as possible." Reactions centered on a feeling of relief from the World Team members typically. Some wrestlers like Joe Williams had spent some time wondering if the Worlds would still take place after the events of September 11th. "It was in the back of my mind, but I didn't let it effect my training. I used the extra time to better prepare myself for the tournament." Dominic Black who wrestles for the Army had a deeper concern on his mind while FILA wrestled with the location problem for the Worlds. Black said, "I didn't want the rescheduled Worlds to interfere with my obligations for the United States Army. It was possible that a country could have been chosen that would have precluded me from wrestling. I don't believe that will happen with it being in Bulgaria now." During a short break in practice Fresno State's World Team member, Stephen Abas, added his thoughts on the November 22nd-25th date. "This puts me back in the right frame of mind. It was getting hard to continue keeping the intensity up not knowing. Now that I know it will happen, I know I'm going to make the most of this opportunity." Eric Guerrero thought about how special it is to be a member of the World Team before he spoke about the new location of Bulgaria. "Too many hours and too many years have gone into my efforts as a wrestler. I won't let location affect my performance or get in the way of my dream. I was going to have a lot of people coming to watch in New York, so I feel bad that they won't be able to make the trip to Sophia, but when it comes down to it wrestling is wrestling whether it is in your backyard as a kid, or in New York City, or in Bulgaria. I'll be ready to compete." Chris Bono's first chance to wrestle for a World Title was going to be even more special considering the large contingent of friends and family that were making plans to be at Madison Square Gardens. "My high school coach was going to be there, and I think he was bringing his parents as well. So, I feel bad that these people who were going to be there to support me probably won't be able to make the trip. My dad might still go. Really now I'll approach it just like it was any other overseas tournament. Of course, it would have been special to wrestle in New York, but the feeling will still be there when I win." Kerry McCoy, America's Freestyle heavyweight and a native of New York, seemed to need a little more time in dealing with the change of location. "It's good to have an answer finally. It would have been special to wrestle in New York", were McCoy's only comments. Fully a year of anticipation and buildup went into the World Championships in New York. The horrible events of September 11th kept America from hosting a tremendous amateur sporting event. Coach Jackson dealt with those thoughts in parting comments, "We would have loved to wrestle in front of our fans in the U.S. It would have been great for the sport of wrestling to be showcased in New York. The media that was set to turnout and the venue would have been unmatched. Maybe we can get the Worlds in the U.S. before the Athens Olympics take place. It is still possible and we are still hopeful that will happen." As the wrestlers finished an increasingly intense practice Coach Jackson shouted words of encouragement. "It won't be long now boys we got a location and a date." With the speculation out of the way each wrestler seemed to dig a little deeper and push a little harder. The Worlds won't be in New York in 2001 but the location will not deter eight Americans on the freestyle team from the drive to capture a World Title.
