STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford Athletic Department announced today that Chris Horpel will become the Director of Wrestling and Steve Buddie will become head wrestling coach.    Horpel will continue to work with the Stanford program as an assistant while increasing his role as the head coach of the five-year old Dave Schultz Wrestling Club.     "I am excited and pleased that we are going to be able to change roles and that I am going to be able to continue helping the Stanford program," said Horpel. "I will continue to hone my skills by helping to coach the Stanford team, while also with the Schultz Club. Continuing to coach at my alma mater while working with elite Olympic-level athletes is the best of both worlds."     Horpel, an All-American and Pac-8 Champion at Stanford, spent the past 22 seasons as the head coach at Stanford. While coaching on The Farm, he has helped produce two Olympic champions, 14 Pan American champions, two NCAA Champions, eight All-Americans, and 12 Pacific-10 Conference champions.     In addition to his collegiate coaching duties, Horpel has also been the head coach of the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club since its inception in 1996. Three DSWC wrestlers made the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team, including freestyle champion Brandon Slay (167.5 lbs). Horpel is also a member of USA Wrestling's national coaching staff.     "I am elated to have the opportunity to serve as Stanford's new head coach," commented Buddie. "This program has a rich and unique history and I am thrilled to be able to continue moving Stanford wrestling's momentum forward."     Buddie, an All-American and Pac-10 Champion, becomes the head coach after serving as the top assistant for the previous three seasons. As a student-athlete at Stanford, Buddie was a three-time NCAA Qualifier, the 1991 conference champion and finished fourth and ninth at the NCAA Championships. He was the 1991 recipient of the Biff Hoffman Award, presented to the most outstanding male senior athlete at Stanford, as well as twice being named the California Collegiate Wrestler of the Year.
