Many scheduled plans and appearances were effected by the recent tragedies in New York and Washington D.C. To assist with promoting wrestling at the grass-roots level, Kerry McCoy has agreed to appear at Chantilly High School in Virginia in place of Tom Brands. Kerry McCoy who will complete his third training cycle at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs on Saturday will be ready to give an outstanding clinic for the wrestling enthusiasts gathered in Virginia. Kerry McCoy, a New York native, currently holds the #1 ranking on Team USA at 130 kg or 286 lbs. He will represent the United States at the World Championships when the tournament is rescheduled by FILA. This past summer McCoy again defeated World Champion Stephen Neal in a two out of three series at the World Team Trials to defend his number one ranking. Last summer, McCoy dethroned Neal at the Olympic Trials in Dallas to earn the freestyle heavyweight berth in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. McCoy won two NCAA Titles while wrestling for Penn State University and has captured two U.S. Nationals Titles in freestyle wrestling. This past spring McCoy won the Gold Medal in the World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling, while leading the United States to the team championship. Kerry McCoy is currently employed as an assistant wrestling coach for Lehigh University. Kerry McCoy gladly stepped forward to help fulfill the clinic obligation for USA Wrestling. In accepting the appearance McCoy said, "I really want to do this to help promote wrestling at all age levels. After going through what was to have been the final training cycle before the World Championships it was hard to adjust to the idea that we weren't going to be able to have the Worlds as scheduled. It is the right decision to postpone the Championships. So, I'm going to use my appearance in Virginia as a way to revitalize myself and enjoy the day working with kids and coaches of the Virginia area." National Teams Director Mitch Hull stated, "We are happy that Kerry is willing to make this commitment so that this event can go forward despite the recent events that have affected this nation so terribly. Kerry McCoy is an outstanding representative of amateur wrestling and people in the Virginia area will enjoy learning from this real wrestling hero." The Virginia Membership Tour is open to people outside of the state. Participants need only to purchase their 2001-2002 Membership card for USA Wrestling to attend the clinic. Coaches of wrestlers are encouraged to organize a team trip to meet Kerry McCoy, the United States World Team Member at heavyweight.
