USA Wrestling has formally requested from FILA, the international wrestling federation, a postponement of the 2001 World Championships of Wrestling, originally scheduled for Madison Square Garden in New York City from September 26-29. The decision to request a postponement was made in cooperation with the technical delegates of FILA, the organizing committee NYC2012 and the Metropolitan Wrestling Association. These groups have carefully assessed the impact of the catastrophic events of the past few days. As the date of these complex Championships draws near, the continued logistical difficulties and uncertainties of air travel and security worldwide led everybody to conclude that the situation is not conducive at this time to such an international competition. The event organizers expect to provide FILA with information about the details of the re-organized competition within the next two weeks. "We are united in the desire to host these Championships at a later date," said Bruce Baumgartner, President of USA Wrestling. "This has the potential to be the greatest World Wrestling Championships ever held, and we are excited about the possibility of holding the event in our nation." "An experienced staff from around the region and across the nation, supported by hundreds of volunteers, are committed to manage this complicated four-day event," said Dan Doctoroff, President of NYC2012. "We have been on track to host an extraordinary event generating enormous support from wrestling fans nationally and internationally." A total of 693 athletes from 82 nations have confirmed with USA Wrestling that they intend on participating in the competition, making it the largest World Championships ever. The planned arrival of some teams for training, as well as key staff and officials, was to begin early next week.
