USA Wrestling names its Team Leaders for the 2001 World Championships

USA Wrestling has announced its team leaders for the 2001 World Wrestling Championships, set for Madison Square Garden in New York City, Sept. 26-29.    Jim Ravannack of Kenner, La. will serve as the Team Leader for the men's freestyle team. Jeff Levitetz of Boca Raton, Fla.  will serve as Team Leader for the men's Greco-Roman team. Art Martori of Phoenix, Ariz. will serve as the Team Leader for the women's freestyle team.    All three of these individuals have been major leaders within USA Wrestling, and all have been active supporters of Team USA for many years. They will be responsible for handling a variety of administrative responsibilities for the U.S. athletes, coaches and staff during the World Championships. It is their responsibility to help provide the necessary conditions and support to allow the U.S. athletes and teams to succeed.    Ravannack serves as the Secretary of USA Wrestling, and has been active with the Board of Directors for a number of years. He is the state chairperson for Louisiana USA Wrestling, organizing wrestling events and programs in his state. He founded the Gator Wrestling Club, which features a number of nationally ranked freestyle wrestlers.    He has served as event director for a number of major USA Wrestling events, including a USA vs. Russia World Dual meet, a Regional Olympic Trials and a number of Junior Regional competitions. He was also a volunteer staff member at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.    "I'm looking forward to the competition," said Ravannack. "Coming off of the recent Olympic Games, the excitement of having all three styles together will be outstanding.  It will be a first, hosting the World Championships in New York City. Our freestyle team has a shot at the title this year. We will be young, but we are ready. I'm excited to be a part of the effort."    Levitetz serves as Co-Chairperson of "Wrestling for the Next Millennium," the joint capital campaign for the sport of wrestling. Levitetz is the Chairman of the Board of Purity Wholesale Grocers, Inc. of Boca Raton, Fla. Purity Wholesale Grocers, Inc. is the official sponsor of USA Wrestling's Greco-Roman National Team and will support the team through the 2004 year in Athens, Greece.    He is a member of USA Wrestling's Board of Directors. Levitetz served as Team Leader for the 1999 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team, which competed in Athens, Greece. USA Wrestling has selected Levitetz as its nominee to serve as Team Leader for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman Team. He was also the founder of the Boca Raton Wrestling Club in Florida.    "This is my second time as team leader and I am now even more excited because I've gotten to know the athletes well personally," said Levitetz. "We have great expectations to do very well. We have a realistic chance to win as a team. We will do everything we can to help the athletes to achieve their goals."    Martori is the founder of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club, one of the most successful wrestling clubs in the world. The Sunkist Kids has produced national and international champions in men's freestyle, men's Greco-Roman and women's freestyle wrestling for 25 years. All six members of the 2001 U.S. Women's World Team compete for the Sunkist Kids.    Martori served as the president of USA Wrestling from 1992-94. He currently chairs USA Wrestling's ad-hoc Women's Wrestling Development Committee.     "I think we will win it," said Martori. "I hope that I can help in any way necessary. We have a talented coaching staff and great women athletes. I believe that we are capable of winning as a team."    The Team Leaders will be working closely with Chef D'Mission Sonny Greenhalgh of Ringwood, N.J., as well as local organizers, USA Wrestling staff members and the U.S. World Team coaching staff.     "As our teams enter this monumental event, they will be in great hands," said USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender. "These four extraordinary individuals, working with one another, will insure that all of the needs of our teams are met. It enables our coaches and athletes to focus on the competition and maximize their performance. USA Wrestling is very grateful to Art, Jeff, Jim and Sonny for their tremendous efforts for our organization and the entire sport."
