The 2000 Olympic champion, David Moussoulbes of Russia, has continued to compete and is expected to be among the stars in New York City.  Moussoulbes won the 2001 European Championships, and looks to continue a tradition of championship performances by Russian super heavyweights.     Moussoulbes defeated exciting young Artur Taymazov of Uzbekistan in the Olympic finals.  Taymazov seemed to come from nowhere prior to the Sydney Olympics and has established himself as a world star. He had an amazing 11-9 victory over U.S. star Kerry McCoy in the quarterfinals at the Olympics, displaying an explosive ability to score points.    McCoy was fifth at the Sydney Olympics, and seeks his first World-level medal. He was fourth at the 1998 World Championships, but had a victory overturned through protest that derailed his chance for the title. McCoy has been toughened by an on-going rivalry with American Stephen Neal, the 1999 World Champion and also a top World star.  McCoy has won three straight World Cup titles, and has beaten many of the other top athletes in this weight. He grew up on Long Island, and will be one of the crowd favorites, an edge that might be helpful in his quest for the gold medal.    2000 Olympic bronze medalist Alexis Rodriguez of Cuba was also the 1998 World Champion and 1997 World silver medalist. He burst onto the World scene in 1997, with a win over Bruce Baumgartner at the World Cup in Stillwater, and has challenged for every major title since. Rodriguez has the skill and temperment to win any event that he enters.    Former World Champion Abbas Jadidi of Iran placed fourth at the Sydney Olympics, and is among the possible entries from Iran. With a large and vocal crowd of Iranian fans expected in New York, Jadidi should be a true force in this division. American fans still remember Jadidi from the overtime match against Kurt Angle in the gold-medal round at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games at 100 kg, a victory for Angle that made international headlines.     The former Soviet republics usually always feature a talented big man. 1996 Olympic silver medalist Aleksei Medvedev of Belarus is always a factor, showing an uncanny ability to be in the medal rounds at major events.  Medvedev place sixth at the Sydney Olympics. Alex Modebadze of Georgia placed second to Moussoulbes in the 2001 European Championships. Ukraine's Ivan Ishenko is an emerging talent who must be taken seriously.    Turkey is traditionally strong at super heavyweight, and lists three entries: Aydin Polatci, Zekeriya Guclu or Tolga Topcu. Polatci, a 1997 Junior World Champion, has been the No. 1 athlete in recent years, but placed only 11th at the Sydney Olympics. Guclu was the 1997 World Champion, defeating Cuba's Rodriguez in the championship match.    Germany's Sven Thiele, who was a 1995 World silver medalist, is experienced and always a threat. Thiele was seventh at the Sydney Olympic Games, and placed third at the 2001 European Championships, beating new Hungarian star Otto Aubeli in the bronze-medal match.    Two time World medalist Marek Garmulewicz of Poland has moved up from 97 kg, where he was fourth at the 2000 Olympic Games. The other possible Polish entry is Dawid Rechul, who had a strong U.S. collegiate career competing for Harvard.    This weight division is always very competitive, and is often a fan favorite. Many nations take great pride in developing powerful super heavyweight stars. The United States is one of those nations with a proud history here, and McCoy has an opportunity to continue that tradition with a victory in his home state of New York.    FREESTYLE 130 kg/286 lbs.
