New York, NY (August 8, 2001) - The 2001 World Championships of Wrestling is on target to be the largest World Championships ever held. Fifty international delegations have sent in commitments to participate in the World Championships in New York City, September 26-29 at Madison Square Garden and more are expected in the upcoming weeks. Countries slated to participate in the World Championships Austria, Australia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, China, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Guinea-Bissau, Hungary, I.R. Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Madagascar, Mongolia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Ukraine, United States of America, Uzbekistan and Yugoslavia. More than 600 athletes are expected to compete in the event. This marks the first time all three wrestling disciplines (Greco-Roman, men's freestyle and women's freestyle) will be held together in the United States, making this event the largest World Championships of Wrestling event ever held.
