New York, NY (August 6, 2001) - World power Cuba was among five more nations that have announced that they will send a delegation to the World Championships in New York this September, according to The World Championships of Wrestling. Cuba, which is a world power in both men's freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, did not indicate the composition of its delegation, but has committed to sending a team in both styles. Two former Soviet Republics that are world powers in international wrestling, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, will also send teams. Five athletes will be competing in the Greco-Roman competition, and seven athletes will be competing in the men's freestyle competition this fall for the Kazakhstan Delegation. Uzbekistan will send a full delegation of men's athletes, with eight athletes competing in the men's freestyle competition and eight athletes competing in the Greco-Roman. Also sending teams will be Greece and Latvia. Six athletes will be competing in the freestyle competition, seven athletes will be competing in the Greco-Roman competition and three athletes will be competing in the women's freestyle competition for the Greek Delegation. Four athletes will be competing in the men's freestyle competition, and one athlete will be competing in the women's freestyle competition this fall for the Latvian Delegation. The deadline for each international federation to secure a country delegation in the World Championships has passed, but a number of expected nations have not yet sent in their information. Final team rosters must be submitted by each international delegation by August 25, 2001. More than 600 athletes from 50 countries are expected to compete in the event. This marks the first time all three wrestling disciplines (Greco-Roman, men's freestyle and women's freestyle) will be held together in the United States, making this event the largest World Championships of Wrestling event ever held. The World Championships of Wrestling will take place at Madison Square Garden, September 26-29, 2001.
