Charleston, SC -- The Citadel signed Sean Markey, a native of Randolph, NJ, to a National-Letter-of-Intent to wrestle at the 133-pound weight class for the Bulldogs beginning next season. Markey, who wrestled at Randolph High School, finished his high school career with a record of 115 wins and eight losses and includes 74 falls. His career dual meet record at Randolph was a staggering 69-1. During his senior season, Markey posted an overall mark of 37 wins and one loss and an undefeated dual meet record of 21-0. Thirty-one of his 37 wins came by fall, 18 of which were in dual meets. Markey was the 2001 New Jersey state runner-up at 130-pounds, losing in the finals to Ed Gutnik, who went on to sign a National Letter-of-Intent with perennial wrestling powerhouse University of Minnesota. On his way to the finals, he defeated three-time state place winner and Fresno State signee Dave Chapman. Markey's wrestling resume also includes a fifth-place finish in the 2000 New Jersey State Championships at 125-pounds, three district championships and two region championships. "Sean is an oustanding addition to The Citadel wrestling program," said coach Rob Hjerling. "He had a very successful high school career and has beaten some of the best wrestlers in the country. We believe he can make an immediate impact."
