New York, NY (August 1, 2001) - World power Iran was among 10 more nations that have announced that they will send a delegation to the World Championships in New York this September according to The World Championships of Wrestling. Iran will send a complete men's freestyle team of eight athletes and a complete men's Greco-Roman team of eight athletes. Another top international power, Belarus, will send a team of eight men's freestyle and two women's freestyle wrestlers to New York. Belarus is also a power in men's Greco-Roman wrestling, but no information on their Greco-Roman team has yet been provided. Another strong wrestling nation, Mongolia, has indicated that it will send a team of 13 athletes to compete this fall at the World Championships. The other new nations in the field include Madagascar (three athletes), Croatia (two athletes), New Zealand (six athletes), Peru (11 athletes), Yugoslavia (four athletes), Egypt (four athletes) and Guine-Bissau (seven athletes). The deadline for each international federation to secure a country delegation in the World Championships has passed, but a number of expected nations have not yet sent in their information. Final team rosters must be submitted by each international delegation by August 25, 2001. More than 600 athletes from 50 countries are expected to compete in the event. This marks the first time all three wrestling disciplines (Greco-Roman, men's freestyle and women's freestyle) will be held together in the United States, making this event the largest World Championships of Wrestling event ever held. The World Championships of Wrestling will take place at Madison Square Garden, September 26-29, 2001.
