John Azevedo named assistant coach at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Ca. - The Cal Poly Department of Athletics has announced the hiring of John Azevedo as the assistant wrestling coach. Director of Athletics John McCutcheon and Head Coach Lennis Cowell made the announcement late last week. Azevedo joins the Cal Poly wrestling program from Calvary Chapel High School in Santa Ana, CA where he severed as head coach since 1989. During his 12 years, Calvary Chapel won seven State Championships, 10 CIF Championships while posting a 183-18 record in duel meets. He was named National High School Coach of the Year in 1993. Prior to arriving at Calvary Chapel, Azevedo served as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin from 1988-1989, University of Notre Dame from 1984-1986, and Cal State Bakersfield from 1981-1984. The 1982 graduate of Cal State Bakersfield won a NCAA Championship in 1980, and was a runner-up in 1978 and '79. Azevedo was a member of the 1980 Olympic Team and National Freestyle Champion in 1981. The 2000 inductee of the California Wrestling Hall of Fame placed fourth in the 1982 World Freestyle Championships.
