The late Tom Shaw of Marysville, Wash. was named 2001 USA Wrestling State Chairperson of the Year. Shaw passed away on April 30, driving home from a major USA Wrestling tournament, the Cadet and Junior Freestyle State Championships in Spokane. Shaw became USA Wrestling's State Chairperson in Washington in 1994, and served with distinction until his death. As State Chairperson, Shaw helped restructure the organization and build it up into today's Washington State Wrestling Association. Working with state leader Sally Bullard, who has computer programming skills, the Washington State Wrestling Association's web page came online in February 2001, just two months before his death (http://www.WashingtonStateWrestling.com). One of Shaw's dreams was to send a Washington team to compete at the USA Wrestling National Junior Duals. In 2000, using his own personal funds, he was able to fund and organize a team for the tournament. Again, in 2001, starting with Shaw's personal donation, Washington again competed in the National Junior Duals. Shaw was a kind and caring individual who did everything within his abilities to make wrestling grow and thrive in his state. He was well respected by his USA Wrestling state leader peers, and helped build the organization in many ways. Professionally, he was a teacher and coach with the Marysville School District. He made a major impact on the lives of many people in his community, both within wrestling and in the general public.
