Korea, Colombia, Ireland Announce Intent To Compete In The World Championships In New York

New York, NY (July 17, 2001) - The World Championships of Wrestling announced today that the Korean National Wrestling Federation will send a delegation to the World Championships in New York this September. Twenty-one athletes will be competing this fall from Korea. The Colombian National Wrestling Federation will also send a delegation to the World Championships in New York this September. Six athletes will be competing this fall from Colombia. In addition, the Ireland National Wrestling Federation will send a delegation to the World Championships in New York this September. Aidan Rice will be competing this fall from Ireland. Rice will be wrestling in men's freestyle at 76 kg. Responses from each international federation must be returned to USA Wrestling by July 25, 2001 in order to secure a country delegation in the World Championships. Final team rosters must be submitted by each international delegation by August 25, 2001. More than 600 athletes from 50 countries are expected to compete in the event. This marks the first time all three wrestling disciplines (Greco-Roman, men's freestyle and women's freestyle) will be held together in the United States, making this event the largest World Championships of Wrestling event ever held. The World Championships of Wrestling will take place at Madison Square Garden, September 26-29, 2001.
