CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- C.D. Mock, UNC wrestling's first national champion, has been named the head assistant coach for the Tar Heel wrestling team, head coach Bill Lam announced today. Mock is in his second year as an assistant at UNC. "I'm very excited to be at Carolina," Mock said. "This was one of my goals, and I feel great that things are progressing in this manner." "I think Carolina is a phenomenal place, and I had a great time here. If I can help the young men that are here have anything close to what I had, I1ll have been successful," he said. In 1982, Mock finished the season 35-0 en route to his championship at 134 pounds and was one of the leaders on a team that finished fifth in the NCAA tournament. Mock was also the recipient of the 1982 Patterson Medal, which is presented to the UNC senior student-athlete that demonstrates athletic excellence. Mock won three Atlantic Coast Conference titles while at Carolina and earned All-America honors twice, in 1979 and 1982. "I'm very excited about what C.D. brings to the program," Lam said. "He's not only a talented wrestler, as evidenced by his being a national champion and a successful high school coach, but he's also extremely valuable because of his business background." "To have our first national champion back is special. And I feel like he wants to give back to the program that had an effect on the success in his life," Lam said. Mock returned to his alma mater from New Hope, Pa., where he served as president of Equity Consultants Company and head wrestling coach at Council Rock High.
