It was formally announced by President Dr. Ronald Thomas in late April that Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minnesota will be adding wrestling as its first sport. The team will participate on the National Junior College level. Athletes who are interested in attending Dakota County Technical College and participating on the wrestling team should contact Zach Anderson at 651-642-1966. "Some people have asked the question, 'Is this going to become a reality?' Let me assure you, it is reality today and we hope to have our team in action this coming year," Dr. Thomas said. "We're very excited, about the intercollegiate wrestling program at Dakota County Technical College." The celebration was held on the campus of Dakota County Technical College and was attended by many prominent people involved in Minnesota wrestling. Those in attendance were Head Coach of the University of Minnesota J. Robinson, Assistant Coach of the University of Minnesota Marty Morgan, head coach of the USA Greco Olympic Team Dan Chandler, Rochester Community College Head Coach Chuck Siefert and others. Dakota County Technical College previously had no sports on campus. Wrestling will be the first sport added with further plans to add men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf and women's volleyball. "This truly is a celebration or excitement for us to be here from the standpoint that you have picked wrestling to add to your sports first here at the technical college," said Gophers head coach J. Robinson. "The President talked about being the first, I think its great anytime you're the leader in anything. To come here and bring sport back on campus, because there's so much sport can do for athletes and the student body when both of them work together. It gives you a perspective in your life that you can't get anywhere else." The process was started approximately 15 months ago with a feasibility study conducted by the college. Financing for the wrestling program and for the programs to be added in the future came from an increase in student fees. The student body is overwhelmingly supportive of the increase to provide these opportunities for the college. "I think this is a great, great opportunity for the state of wrestling and for the kids that are in this area. I am really glad to see that the people in the administration that are behind wrestling and know the great qualities behind it and what it can do for not only for the school but for the people involved," said Gopher head assistant Marty Morgan. Representing MN/USA Wrestling, head Greco Olympic coach Dan Chandler had this to say, "Our Board of Directors has heard about your initiating a wrestling program and they are extremely excited as well. We are all very excited about what you're doing and wish you all the luck in the world." There has been no coach hired as of yet and a committee is being assembled to formally open the position and accept applications. - information from report on The Guillotine and other sources
