World Champions Neal, Marano and Bacher win Challenge Tournament in freestyle wrestling at World Team Trials in Cincinnati    Three past World Champions won the Challenge Tournament at their weight class and advance to the Championship finals series in freestyle wrestling at the World Team Trials at the Cintas Center at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, June 23.    Stephen Neal (Bakersfield, Calif./Sunkist Kids), a 1999 World Champion at 286 pounds, won his Challenge Tournament in the men's division. Winning on the women's side were 2000 World Champion Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) at 149.75 pounds and 1999 World Champion Sandra Bacher (San Jose, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 165.25 pounds.    Winners of the Challenge Tournament advance to Sunday's best-of-three Championship Series against the 2001 U.S. Nationals champion at their weight class. Winners on Sunday qualify for the U.S. World Team which will compete in Madison Square Garden in New York City in September.    Neal dominated Tolly Thompson, Lincoln, Neb. (Sunkist Kids), 7-0 in the Challenge Tournament finals.    Neal will face 2000 Olympian Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa./New York AC) in best-of-three Championship Series on Sunday. It will be a rematch of the 2000 Olympic Team Trials, won by McCoy. Neal was unable to compete at the 2001 U.S. Nationals due to injury, so this will be the first meeting since the Olympic Trials.    Marano stopped Katie Downing (Pendleton, Ind./UM-Morris), 6-1 in the finals match. Marano will face 2001 National champion Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) in best-of-three championship series on Sunday. Montgomery, a high school senior, upset Marano at the U.S. Nationals and was named Outstanding Wrestler.    Sandra Bacher pinned Melani Macari (Fremont, Calif./Missouri Valley College), in 1:21 to claim the Challenge Tournament. Bacher has moved up one weight class from 149.75 pounds, where she won her World title and three World medals.    Bacher will face two-time U.S. Nationals champion Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in best-of-three championship series on Sunday.    The action was exciting in both divisions, as a number of new stars have emerged on the national scene.    Three men's freestyle wrestlers who have placed second in past Olympic Team Trials won their Challenge Tournaments today. All three are seeking their first berth on a U.S. World Team. They included Kerry Boumans (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 127.75 pounds, John Fisher (Ann Arbor, Mich./Sunkist Kids) at 138.75 pounds and Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 152 pounds.    Boumans defeated Dan Felix (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids), 3-0 in the final match. Boumans will face Eric Guerrero, Stillwater, Okla. (Sunkist Kids) in best-of-three Championship Series on Sunday. Boumans was second in the 2000 Olympic Team Trials to eventual Olympic bronze medalist Terry Brands    Fisher stopped Dustin DeNunzio (Cambridge, Mass./Dave Schultz WC), 7-4 in the final match. Fisher will face Bill Zadick (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) in best-of-three Championship Series on Sunday. Fisher was second in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Team Trials, losing to eventual Olympic champions John Smith and Tom Brands.    Bono defeated Chris Ayers (Bethlehem, Pa./NYAC), 6-2 in the finals. Bono will face Ramico Blackmon, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Team Excel) in best-of-three Championship Series on Sunday. Bono was second to eventual Olympic bronze medalist Lincoln McIlravy in the 2000 Olympic Team Trials.    Other men's freestyle champions were Stephen Abas, Fresno, Calif. (Sunkist Kids) at 119 pounds, Byron Tucker, Norman, Okla. (Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds, Brandon Eggum, Minneapolis, Minn. (Minn. Storm) at 187.25 pounds and Chad Lamer, Coralville, Iowa (Hawkeye) at 286 pounds.     Other women champions were Clarissa Chun, Kapolei, Hawaii (Missouri Valley College) at 101.25 pounds, Patricia Miranda, Saratoga, Calif. (Dave Schultz WC) at 112.25 pounds, Carrie Birge, Omaha, Neb. (Missouri Valley College) at 123.25 pounds and Tonya Evinger, Bates City, Mo. (Missouri Valley) at 136.5 pounds.
