Wrestling legend Dan Gable will make a special appearance in Cincinnati, Ohio, as part of the activities surrounding the 2001 Senior World Team Trials, presented by United Airlines, next weekend.    "A Conversation with Dan Gable" will take place at the Cintas Center at Xavier University on Sunday, June 24, at approximately 12:00 noon. This will be immediately following the morning session of wrestling action at the Senior World Team Trials.    All ticketholders for the wrestling event will have an opportunity to meet Gable and hear an inspiring personal message for free.    Gable, a 1972 Olympic Champion in freestyle wrestling, captivated the nation with his amazing work ethic and skill, becoming the best-known wrestler in American history. He went on to become the greatest college sports coach of all time, leading the Univ. of Iowa wrestling team to an amazing 15 NCAA team titles during his 21 years as a coach. Gable has also served as the coach of three U.S. Olympic wrestling teams.    The 2001 Senior World Team Trials, presented by United Airlines, will be held at the Cintas Center at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, June 22-24.      A strong field of up to 175 of the best freestyle, Greco-Roman and women wrestlers in the nation are expected to compete. Champions from this competition will receive the coveted opportunity to wrestle on U.S. soil at the 2001 World Championships of Wrestling, which will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, September 26-29.    Many star athletes will be on display during the three days of competition. Olympic gold-medalist Rulon Gardner, Olympic silver medalists Sammie Henson, Matt Lindland and Dennis Hall and Olympic bronze medalist Garrett Lowney are among the top men's qualifiers for the tournament. Past Women's World Champions Tricia Saunders, Sandra Bacher and Kristie Marano are among the women qualifiers for the event.    Since retiring from his position as head coach at the Univ. of Iowa, Dan Gable has served as one of the top ambassadors for the sport, working to strengthen and build wrestling all across the nation. His unique perspective as one of the greatest athletes, coaches and leaders in U.S. sports history makes his message especially powerful and meaningful.    Gable was one of the co-head coaches of the 2000 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team. The U.S. won four medals and placed second in the medal count at the Sydney Olympic Games in freestyle wrestling. Gable also served as head coach of the 1980 and 1984 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling teams. The 1980 team was unable to participate in the Moscow Olympics due to the U.S. boycott of the Games. The 1984 U.S. Olympic team dominated the Games, winning seven gold medals and two silver medals.    Gable also served as the head coach of five U.S. World teams (1977, 1978, 1979, 1983 and 1994). Gable coached 10 U.S. World Cup teams, as well as the 1986 U.S. Goodwill Games team.    He is considered the most successful college coach of all time, setting numerous career records as the head coach for the Univ. of Iowa. His Iowa teams won 15 NCAA team titles during his 21-year career, including an amazing streak of nine in a row from 1978-86. He retired from college coaching after winning the 1997 NCAA team title, with a record number of team points.     Gable was a 1972 Olympic gold medalist and 1971 World champion as an athlete. Gable's gold-medal performance at the Munich Olympic Games, where he did not allow a point to his opponents, is one of the sport's most famous moments. He was a two-time NCAA champion for Iowa State Univ. He lost only one match during his entire high school and college wrestling career. Gable originally hails from Waterloo, Iowa.    Sports fans will not want to miss the action at the Senior World Team Trials. The tournament format features a two-day Challenge Tournament and a championship finals series. The Challenge Tournament in all three styles will be held on Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23. This includes all of the competitors except for the 2001 National Champions, who are automatically in the finals. On Sunday, June 24, the Championship finals in each weight class will be held, featuring the national champion facing the Challenge Tournament winner in a best-of-three series.
