Minnesota wins Cadet National Greco-Roman Duals, defeating California 28-23 in the finals

Minnesota defeated California 28-23 in the gold-medal finals of the Cadet National Greco-Roman Duals, held in Englewood, Colo. on Thursday, June 14.    The championship dual meet was very close throughout. The score was tied, 22-22, with two matches left when Kyle Massey (209) and Jon May (242) of Minnesota both won by decision. Other individual winners for Minnesota in the gold-medal bout were Ryan Adams (88), Tyler Safratowich (94.5), Gabe Mooney (103.5), Kent Nathe (112), Nate Matousek (143), George Lynaugh (154). California was the defending Cadet National Duals champion in Greco-Roman.    Oregon finished in third place,  with an 11 point victory over Kansas Gold, 30-19. Oregon claimed five straight matches in the middle weights to break open the dual meet.    Ohio won on a tie breaker against Michigan, after a 26-26 tie, to claim fifth place. Ohio trailed by four team points going into the final bout, when Tony Johnson claimed four team points at 242 pounds to force the tie.    Utah claimed seventh place, with a tight 26-24 victory over Colorado Gold. Utah won seven straight matches for an insurmountable lead, even though Colorado won the last four bouts.    Claiming the title in the consolation bracket was Indiana, which defeated Florida by a 32-19 margin. The consolation bracket featured teams that did not qualify for the championship rounds.    A total of 17 teams entered this year in Greco-Roman, an impressive increase in participation from nine teams last year, which was the first year of this new age-group national event.
