Tour of Legends to gather largest number of Olympic and World Medal winners at one time

New York, NY (June 13) - The World Championships of Wrestling's Tour of Legends announced Thursday that it will be presenting the largest number of Olympic and World Medal winners at one time under one roof Saturday, June 23 at the World Team Trials in Cincinnati, OH.  The "Medal Challenge," scheduled to take place from 3-4:00 p.m. in the Founders Club VIP Room at Xavier University's Cintas Center, brings together the best American competitive wrestlers as the Tour makes another stop on its way towards one of the sport's ultimate competitions, the World Championships, this September in New York.    Organizers of the Medal Challenge are expecting nearly 20 former medallists with over 50 Olympic and World Championship medals to be in attendance.  Some of the dominant wrestlers expected to be there include Rulon Gardner, 2000 Olympic Gold Medallist, Dan Gable, an Olympic and World Gold Medallist and John Smith, a two-time Olympic Gold Medallist and a four-time World Gold-Medallist.  Other greats include Kevin Bracken, Greg Gibson, Jim Gruenwald, Dennis Hall, Jim Humphrey, Zeke Jones, Lauren Lamb, Darnell Lollis, Steven Mays, Steve Frasier, Russ Hellickson, Kevin Jackson, Tricia Saunders, Bill Scherr and Stan Dziedzic.    Among the medallists assembled will be Tour of Legends spokesperson Nancy Schultz, whose late husband Dave was a World and Olympic Champion.  Schultz runs the enormously successful Dave Schultz Wrestling Club, which provides amateur wrestlers with funds, facilities and coaches.    "I'm personally looking forward to seeing many of America's Greatest Wrestling Legends and their medals together in one room," said Nancy Schultz, Tour of Legends spokeswomen.  "The Medal Challenge is a great way to kick off the "Road to New York" and get America's Wrestling fans excited about the upcoming World Championships this September."      The Medal Challenge participants will be available for a group photo as well as one-on-one interviews following the presentation.  Following the event will be the Freestyle Challenge matches followed by the Team Trial finals on Sunday.    In addition to the Medal Challenge ceremony, some of the Legends will be attending a special autograph signing at the USA Wrestling Developmental Camp at the Cintas Center on Friday, June 22 from 3-4:00 p.m..  The "Legends Autograph Session" is open to the public.      The Tour of Legends has visited major wrestling championships and events across the country over the last three months to celebrate the sport of wrestling in anticipation of the 2001 World Championships for Wrestling, coming this September 26-29 in New York City.  At the helm of the Tour is the dynamic team of USA Wrestling and NYC2012, the committee behind New York City's bid for the 2012 Olympics.  The four-day event, which will boast over 600 competitors representing nearly 50 countries, will feature both male and female freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. Countries with strong teams expected to participate, in addition to the all-star team from the United States, include Russia, Iran, Japan, Germany, Korea, Turkey, Ukraine and China.
