TOM BRANDS NAMED NWCA COLLEGE ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR    Tom Brands of Iowa City, Iowa has been named College Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). The award was presented at the NWCA awards banquet in Dallas, Texas June 21.     Brands serves as head assistant coach for the University of Iowa. Iowa won its sixth straight Div. I NCAA Championship in March, its ninth title in ten years.     Brands assisted in producing six All-Americans in the 2000 NCAA tournament including one national champion, Eric Juergens; one runner-up; and three third place finishers.      Iowa also won a Big Ten title in 2000, its 26th title in the past 27  years. The team finished the 1999-2000 season undefeated with a 18-0 dual meet record.    First an assistant under Dan Gable, Brands has coached at Iowa for eight seasons. Prior to coaching he was a four-time All-American at Iowa and won three NCAA titles. He was also a three time Big 10 champion and finished his collegiate career with a record of 158-8-2.    In 1996, Brands won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta at 136.5 pounds. He was a World Freestyle Champion in 1993 and a World Cup Champion in 1994 and 1995.
