Oregon State announces team awards

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Eric Jorgensen was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler when Oregon State held its year-end banquet recently. Jorgensen (La Grande, Ore./La Grande HS), a senior 157-pounder, earned All-America honors by placing fifth at the NCAA Championships after winning the Pacific-10 title. Jorgensen finished the season with a 37-7 record and four pins. He earned team bonus points for winning by pin, technical fall, major decision or forfeit in 48 percent of his matches this season. The Chad Flack Memorial Award for Most Improved Wrestler went to sophomore 197-pounder Jason Lovell (Turner, Ore./Cascade HS). Lovell placed fifth in the Pacific-10 meet, finishing the year with a 16-13 record and one pin. The Most Promising Newcomer Award went to freshman 165-pounder Jed Pennell (Cave Junction, Ore./Illinois Valley HS). Pennell placed fifth in the Pacific-10 meet and advanced to the NCAA Championships, wrapping up the season with a 17-12 record and three pins. The Academic Excellence Award also went to Pennell. Pennell was a first-team selection on the Pacific-10 All-Academic team with a 3.82 grade point average; he is majoring in Exercise and Sport Science.
