CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State has signed three in-state wrestlers to national letters of intent, OSU coach Joe Wells announced Thursday. Jed Lowe (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston HS), Kevin Miles (Portland, Ore./Grant HS) and Orlando Perez (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston HS) will enter OSU as freshmen this coming fall.    "These are three outstanding athletes and outstanding young men," Wells said. "We're looking forward to having them on our team, because they've shown the type of ability that will improve the quality of wrestling in our program. They've also shown that they're serious about their education, and we're eager to see them progress in that area, as well. We feel this completes a tremendous recruiting class for us."    The three join OSU's five recruits from last fall's early signing period: Chris Lopez (Azusa, Calif./Northview HS), Brett Phillips (Turner, Ore./Cascade HS), Daniel Pitsch (Spanaway, Wash./Spanaway HS), Mike Unger (Turner, Ore./Cascade HS) and Anthony Weber (Newberg, Ore./Newberg HS).    "It's a great group," Wells said of the recruiting class. "It's well-balanced and has great athletes with some tremendous potential. We don't know how many of them will contribute immediately, but a couple of them could contribute right away. If they're the best guy (at their weight), they're going to wrestle. But we've got more depth than we've had for a long time, so they're going to challenge and be challenged."    Lowe won the Class 4A state title at 189 pounds last winter, recording three pins in his five matches at the state meet to help the Bulldogs to the team championship. He has also won a state freestyle title, and his high school coaches were former OSU standouts Cliff and Curt Berger.    "He's a complete high school wrestler," Wells said of Lowe. "He's good at getting away, he's good on his feet, and his strong points are probably riding and pinning. He'll be a very good addition to our team in that same weight class with Jason Lovell (197 pounds)."    Miles placed third in the Class 4A state meet at 189 pounds last winter after losing a hard-fought match to Lowe in the semifinals. He was the four-time league wrestler of the year and has also won a state freestyle title and cadet All-America honors.    "He's a gifted athlete," Wells said of Miles. "He's a little guy who grew into a big guy; he learned to wrestle as a little guy, and it shows. He's gotten better each year. He's a good student and an outstanding all-around citizen. He comes out of the outstanding Peninsula Wrestling Club where Roy Pittman coaches, and we're very pleased to have Kevin on our team."    Perez won the Class 4A state title at 140 pounds this past winter for Hermiston's state championship team, also wrestling for OSU alums Cliff and Curt Berger. Perez had four pins in his five matches at the state meet.    "He's tough," Wells said of Perez. "He's only wrestled four years; he started his freshman year in high school and he's progressed in a hurry. He's aggressive, he's very good on his feet, he's tenacious and he goes for the pin. He works hard and he's trying to put the guy on his back, which was very evident at state meet. He's got a great attitude."
