There has been a lot of controversy lately at UC Davis. Athletics Director Greg Warzecka has decided not to renew the contract of head wrestling coach Mike Burch, effective June 1. Warzecka is yet to give a reason to anyone as to why he decided Burch's contract should not be renewed - not even to Burch. When Warzecka informed Burch of his new fate, he simply stated "I don't have to give you a reason" when Burch asked why his contract was not renewed. Burch had led UC Davis to their most successful season in school history. The team placed seventh in the PAC-10 Championships, with a school-record six conference placewinners. The program also sent a school-record four individuals to the NCAA Championships. Burch was named UC Davis Coach of the Year by the students of UC Davis for the second time in his five-year career. Burch's contract was not renewed (meaning he was fired) because he stood up for women wrestlers that had been practicing in the wrestling room. Warzecka and the rest of the Athletics Department did not feel that the women should be included on the team roster, thus keeping them from receiving benefits such as insurance and medical treatment among other things. Burch waited until after the season before making a move. In April, the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) filed a complaint to the University. Assemblywoman Helen Thomson has offered solutions to help UC Davis clean up this mess, including raising the cap for the wrestling team so more women can be added to the roster, but no settlement has been reached. Thomson is also adamant that female wrestlers should be part of the varsity team, as they have in the past, and not be relegated to club status. This is what Burch stood up for, and when he felt the University had done wrong, he spoke against it. It was for that reason he was not asked to sign another contract this Spring. Burch took the UC Davis wrestling program from the cellar of the PAC-10 to competitive status. He worked on a total operational budget of $30,000 per year, which included travel, phone calls, etc. He was only allowed $22,000 in scholarship money, and was not allowed to offer free room and boards to any recruits. In all, he had less than 2.0 scholarships to work with. Not only has the UC Davis Athletics Department done an injustice to Burch, but they have done an injustice to wrestling, and more specifically, women's wrestling. The wrestling community, women's wrestling community and Mike Burch need you to help by sending E-Mails to Athletics Director Greg Warzecka and Vice Chancellor Dennis Shimek, who is now handling the controversy at UC Davis. If we can flood their office with E-Mails, and give them more heat for the wrong they have done, hopefully it will at least lead to the start of a women's wrestling program, and possibly Coach Burch will have his job back. It is recommended that you CC Helen Thomson in ALL E-Mails. This is a request from her staff as she is fighting for the rights of wrestling. Please be civil in your E-Mails, but also firmly state your point. UC Davis officials need to know we are angered by what has happened in recent months.
