Army defeats Russia in Greco-Roman Dual Meet May 19

The U.S. Army Greco-Roman wrestling team defeated a Russian National Team four matches to one in a dual meet that was held at Ft. Carson Army base in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 19. 

The lineup for Army included 1996 U.S. Nationals champion Miguel Spencer, 1996 University Nationals champion Herb House and many other top Greco-Roman wrestlers from the senior level.

Spencer, wrestling at 167.5 pounds, scored a 7-0 decision over Alexandre Konoplenko. In addition to the U.S. Nationals, Spencer has won the University Nationals and has placed third at the Michigan Open.

House, the 1996 University Nationals champion, claimed the first win of the dual meet for Army with a 4-0 decision over Vitali Boronine at 138.75 pounds. House, who placed fourth at the 1996 U.S. Nationals, is also the 1996 Armed Forces champion.

Glenn Nieradka registered the only pin of the evning when he caught Vlas Dodokhov at 3:20 to win the 152 match. Nieradka placed sixth at the U.S. Nationals at 152 pounds.

The final win for Army came from Kenny Owens who scored a 4-0 decision over Alexei Doubrov at 187.25 pounds. Owens placed fourth in the U.S. Nationals at 187.25 pounds.

The only loss in the dual meet for Army came at 275.5 pounds with Dremiel Byers dropping a 5-4 decision to Evgveni Volnukh. Byers, the 1996 Armed Forces champion and University Nationals runner-up, placed fifth at the U.S. Nationals at 275.5 pounds.

The first two matches of the evening were exhibition matches between Army wrestlers.

At 119 pounds Anthony Gibbons scored a 13-5 decision over Anthony Wilkes. Gibbons placed seventh in the 1996 U.S. Nationals at 119 pounds. Wilkes was the runner-up at the Nationals at 110 pounds.

At 127.75 pounds Jason Tolbert won a 4-0 overtime decision over Keith Idleburg. Tolbert placed sixth at the U.S. Nationals while Idleburg finished fourth, both at 127.75 pounds.

The Army team, based in Ft. Benning, Ga., is coached by 1996 U.S. Olympic Team member Derrick Waldroup and assistant coach Anatoly Nazarenko.
