CUBA SWEEPS UNITED STATES IN GRECO-ROMAN DUAL MEET PRIOR TO 1997 CONCORD CUP INTERNATIONAL 

CONCORD, Calif. -- Cuba claimed all eight individual matches over the United States in a Greco-Roman dual meet held in at California High School in San Ramon, Calif., Wednesday, May 28.

Cuba, led by 1996 Olympic champion Filiberto Ascuy, is coming off a dominating performance at the 1997 Pan merican Games where they claimed all eight gold medals and secured the team title.The dual meet was held prior to the 1997 Concord Cup International tournament which will be held May 31 -June 1 at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord, Calif.

Ascuy defeated Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) 6-2 in a rematch of the 1996 World Cup gold medal match which Lindland won 6-4. Lindland placed second at the 1997 U.S. Nationals.

1997 Pan Am Championships gold medalist Lazaro Rivas claimed the first win on the night for Cuba with a 10-0 technicall fall victory over Cody Sanderson (Heber City, Utah/Cyclone WC) at 54 kg./119 lbs. Rivas, a bronze medalist at the 1996 World Cup, placed fifth at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Sanderson is a past Junior Nationals champion who is wrestling at the senior level for the first time.

Duaine Martin (Quantico,Va./Marines) lost a close 5-4 decision to 1996 World Cup champion Luis Sarmiento at 58 kg./127.75 lbs. Martin, the 1997 Armed Forces champion, placed third in the 1997 U.S. Nationals.

Also preceeding the Concord Cup International is the Gold Medal Challenge, which will be held Thursday, May 29 in the Concord Hilton Ballroom at 7:00 p.m. The Gold Medal Challenge features an all-star dual meet between the United States and international competitors scheduled to compete in the Concord Cup.The United States will be represented by all eight 1997 National champions. The international lineup is highlighted by 1996 Olympic champions Yuri Melnichenko of Kazakhstan at 58 kg./127.75 lbs. and Filiberto Ascuy of Cuba at 76 kg./167.5 lbs. The field will also include many other World and Olympic medalists from Belarus, Cuba, Kazakhstan and Sweden.
