FIVE U.S. WRESTLERS CLAIM WINS AT 1997 GOLD MEDAL CHALLENGECONCORD, Calif. -- Broderick Lee (Portland, Ore./Peninsula WC), James Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), Chris Saba (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC), Dan Henderson (Huntington Beach, Calif./S. Calif. Future Champions) and Rulon Gardner (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) claimed wins at the 1997 Gold Medal Challenge held in the Concord Hilton, May 29.
The Gold Medal Challenge is a dual format competition featuring U.S. and international wrestlers. The competition takes advantage of the elite athletes taking part in the 1997 Concord Cup International to be held at Mt. Diablo Valley high school, May 31-June 1.
Lee gained the first win of the night for U.S. wrestlers with a 4-0 overtime decision over Daniel Abelsson of Sweden at 54 kg./119 lbs. Lee, the 1997 U.S. Nationals champion, was aggressive throughout the match building a 2-0 lead during regulation. In overtime, Lee scored a two point gutwrench to win the match.
Gruenwald gained revenge with his 4-0 decision over Luis Sarmiento of Cuba in the 58 kg./127.75 lbs. finals. Gruenwald, the runner-up at the 1997 U.S. Nationals, lost a 4-1 decision to Sarmiento in the finals of the 1997 Pan American Championships, May 23 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Saba, the 1997 U.S. Nationals champion at 69 kg./152 lbs., scored a 12-2 technical fall victory over Trygge Gustafsson of Sweden in the 69 kg./152 finals.
Henderson, a two-time Olympian, scored a decisive 10-0 technical fall win over Daniel Iglesias of Argentina in the 85 kg./187.5 lb. finals. Henderson controlled the match from the beginning scoring a one point takedown in the first 15 seconds. He ended the match by throwing Iglesias for three consecutive three-point throws. Iglesias competed in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea for Argentina.
Gardner also enacted some revenge on the evening with a 2-1 overtime decision over former World and Olympic champion Hector Milian of Cuba in the 125 kg./275.5 lb. final. Milian defeated Gardner 3-0 in the finals of the Pan American Championships, May 23. This matchup is becoming one to watch on the international scene. Gardner defeated Milian at the 1996 World Cup in November, while Milian defeated Gardner at the 1997 Granma Cup held in Cuba.
A rematch is expected to take place in the finals of the Concord Cup this weekend.The 1997 Concord Cup will get underway Saturday, May 31 with wrestling scheduled from 9:00-11:30 a.m., 1:00-3:30 p.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m. The competition continues on Sunday, June 1 with sessions set for 12:00-1:00 p.m. and 1:00-2:00 p.m. The third and fifth place matches will take place from 4:30-5:30 p.m. with the finals scheduled from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
