Zummo leads list of winners at 1997 Women's World Team Trials Mini-Tournament; winners advance to final series on Saturday, June 14 

ROSEVILLE, Calif. -- 1995 World bronze medalist Vickie Zummo (Hamburg, N.J./NYAC) led the list of winners in the 1997 Women's World Team Trials Mini-Tournament, held Friday, June 13 at Woodcreek High Schol in Roseville, Calif.

The Mini-tournament winners now advance to a best two out of three finals series against the 1997 U.S. Nationals champion. The finals series will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 14. The second and third matches are scheduled from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Zummo, the 1997 U.S. Nationals champion at 51 kg./112.25 lbs., moved up a weight class to compete at 56 kg./123.25 lbs. Zummo defeated 1996 World silver medalist Jackie Berube (Escanaba, Mich./Wildcat) in the finals of the mini-tournament, scoring a pin in 1:12. Zummo will now face 1997 U.S. Nationals champion and 1996 World Team member Stephanie Murata (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) in the best of three series on Saturday.

Other mini-tournament winners included Lisa Berube (Escanaba, Mich./Wildcat) at 46 kg./101.25 lbs., Treeva Cohee (Omaha, Neb./Edmondson YMCA) at 51 kg./112.25 lbs., Jimi Dawn Hornbuckle (Poteau, Okla./unattached) at 62 kg./136.5 lbs., Kristie Jeffrey (Deland, Fla./UM-Morris) at 68 kg./149.5 lbs. and Dominique Smalley, Iowa City, Iowa (unattached).

Berube scored a 6-2 decision over Angela Hesener (Ann Arbor, Mich./UM-Morris) to claim the 46 kg./101.25 lbs. title. Berube will now face 1997 U.S. Nationals runner-up Afsoon Roshanzamir in the finals. Roshanzamir gained the top seed when Nationals champion Rosemarie Unpingco weighed in at 51 kg./112.25 lbs.

Cohee, who placed third in the 1997 Nationals, claimed the mini-tournament at 51 kg./112.25 lbs. when Malissa Sherwood (Antelope, Calif./Sierra Kids) was forced to withdraw with an injury. Cohee will face three-time World silver medalist Shannon Williams in the finals. Williams, the 1997 Nationals runner-up, moved to the top seed when Vickie Zumo moved up to compete at 56 kg./123.25 lbs.

Hornbuckle, who placed third at the 1997 Nationals, scored a 6-5 decision over Diana Wesendunk (Hillsborough, Calif./Peninsula Grapplers) to claim the 62 kg./136.5 lb. title in the mini-tournament. Hornbuckle will now face 1997 Nationals champion Lauren Wolfe for a spot on the World Team.

Jeffrey, who placed sixth in the 1997 Nationals at 56 kg./123.25 lbs., moved up to the 68 kg./149.5 lb. weight class and claimed the mini-tournament with a pin over Jennifer Cameron (Kent, Wash./unattached) in 1:26. Jeffrey now advances to the final best-of-three series against 1997 Nationals champion Sandra Bacher (San Jose, Calif./Dave Schultz WC). This series will take place at a later date due to an injury suffered by Bacher. As the top seed, Bacher can delay the final series if she has suffered an injury.

Smalley, who placed third at the 1997 Nationals, claimed her spot in the final series with a 10-0 technical fall victory over Iris Smith (Albany, Ga./UM-Morris). Smalley will now battle 1996 World silver medalist Kristie Stenglein (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) in the final series.
