PIROZZOLA, CLARK, ROWLANDS CLAIM FOURTH PLACE AT CADET WORLD FREESTYLE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN NEW DELHI, INDIA, AND UNITED STATES PLACES SIXTH AS A TEAM 

Three U.S. wrestlers placed fourth in their weight classes at the 1997 Cadet World Freestyle Championships at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, India, June 18-21. The Cadet World Championships featured the best athletes in the world between 14-16 years old.

Claiming fourth place were Michael Pirozzola of Levittown, Pa. at 125.5 pounds, Tommy Rowlands of Columbus, Ohio at 167.25 pounds and Trey Clark of LaPorte, Iowa at 182.5 pounds.

Pirozzola lost his first match, but won five straight matches to qualify for the bronze-medal bout, where he was beaten by Z. Rovstanislav of Tadjikistan, 5-2. He had a 5-2 record in the tournament.

Rowlands also had a strong 5-2 record in the competition. He rebounded from a second-round loss to win four matches in the consolation rounds. Rowlands fell to S. Khare Bava of Georgia, 5-0 in the bronze-medal match.

Clark pinned his first two opponents, and finished with a 3-2 record in the competition. He was beaten by Kamran Amiri of Iran in the third-place bout, 6-0.

Mike Akers of Poquoson, Va. placed fifth at 105.5 pounds. Akers won his first two matches, then dropped two bouts in the consolation rounds to qualify for the fifth-place bout, where he defeated Paramjit of India by technical fall, 12-1.

Placing sixth for the U.S. team were Cliff Moore of Dubuque, Iowa at 114.5 pounds and Wes Roberts of Oklahoma City, Okla. at 152 pounds.

Moore had a 3-3 record in the tournament, losing to F. Llon of Moldova by technical fall in the fifth place bout, 11-1. Roberts registered a 4-3 record, losing a close 9-7 decision to B. Shota of Georgia in the fifth place bout.

The United States placed sixth in the final standings among 32 nations in the field. Russia won the team title, followed by the host team from India.

The head coach of the U.S. Cadet World freestyle team was Andy Rein of Hawthorne Woods, Ill. and the assistant coach was Tony Jones of Coos Bay, Ore.
