CAMPBELL NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF USA BOXING

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., June 25, 1997 - Chris Campbell of San Rafael, Calif., has been named executive director of United States Amateur Boxing, Inc., (USA Boxing).

Campbell, 42, was selected by USA Boxing's Board of Directors following a four-month nation-wide search. The two-time Olympic wrestler will be the first black executive director of an American Olympic sport.

"I look forward to reestablishing the United States as a leader in the international boxing community," Campbell said. "I am committed to new fundraising opportunities and the development of alumni relations."

He becomes only the third Executive Director of the national governing body since USA Boxing (formerly the United States of America Amateur Boxing Federation) was established in 1978.

Campbell's Olympic history includes two Olympic wrestling teams, first in 1980 (U.S. boycott) then in 1992, where he won a bronze medal. Since 1992, Campbell has sat on the United States Olympic Committee's (USOC) Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He had also served on the United States Wrestling Association's Board of Directors as secretary and chairman of the Athletes' Advisory Council.

For the last year Campbell worked as the lead negotiator for Albertson's Corporation, where he was responsible for a variety of employment law issues. He is also a lead arbitrator for the International Council of Arbitration for Sports, (ICAS) which presides over legal disputes at the Olympic Games. Before that he served as an attorney for United Technologies Corporation/Carrier Corp., from 1987 to 1996. During his tenure he oversaw a wide range of business and legal matters.

Campbell graduated from the University of Iowa in 1979 with a sociology degree and Cornell University Law School in 1987.

As executive director, Campbell will be responsible for carrying out the directives of USA Boxing's Board of Directors, supervising the organization's national headquarters staff, communicating with the leadership and member nations of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) and working with all components of USA Boxing toward the betterment of the sport of Olympic-style boxing within the United States.

USA Boxing, the national governing body for Olympic-style boxing in the United States, currently has 30,000 registered members throughout the country.
