TERESA GORDON-DICK WINS GOLD-MEDAL AT USA WRESTLING KIDS NATIONAL GRECO-ROMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS, THE FIRST FEMALE TO WIN A USA WRESTLING NATIONAL TITLE AGAINST MALES

Teresa Gordon-Dick of Redwood Valley, Calif., became the first female to win a USA Wrestling national title in competition against males, when she captured the 100-pound title in the Novice division at the USA Wrestling National Kids Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships at the Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa, July 3.

USA Wrestling is hosting its first Kids National Tournament, which features athletes 9-14 years old. Gordon-Dick wrestles in the Novice division, which is for 11-12 year olds.

Prior to this year, USA Wrestling national events have been in higher age levels, the Cadet (15-16), Junior (high school), Espoir (17-20) and University (18-24), as well as the Senior (17 and older) levels.

Note: USA Wrestling does host national competition for female wrestlers on the Cadet (14-16) and the Senior (16 and older) levels.

Gordon-Dick, 12, won five matches on the way to the crown. She scored four pins and a 13-1 technical fall during the tournament. In the gold-medal finals, she pinned Christopher Page of Gladstone, Mo. in 0:47.

Gordon-Dick has wrestled since the age of six. She said that she has won all of her matches this spring on the state and regional level, before entering the National Championships. Among her victories were the freestyle and Greco-Roman gold medal at the Western Regional Kids/Cadet Championships in Butte, Mont. in June. She also won California state titles in freestyle, Greco-Roman and womenÕs wrestling this season.

She is a member of the Ukiah Freestyle Club, and is a home schooled student on independent study. She will enter the seventh grade this fall. Gordon-Dick also is a successful soccer player. Her brother Soloman also wrestled in the tournament.

"I did this for fun, and it was really fun," said Gordon-Dick. "The Nationals is a little bit harder and it's a bigger achievement than the other events.Ó

Special Note: Teresa Gordon-Dick placed second in the freestyle tournament at 100 pounds on July 5.
