Four of the six members of the U.S. Women's World Team are undefeated after the first day of competition at the 1997 Women's World Wrestling Championships in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Three of the U.S. wrestlers have secured a spot in the semifinals at their weight: Shannon Williams (Simi Valley, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 123.25 pounds, Sandra Bacher (San Jose, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 149.75 pounds and Kristie Stenglein (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) at 165.25 pounds.

Williams won her first two matches in overtime, stopping Tanya Sauter of Germany, 3-2 and Miho Adachi of Japan, 2-1. She will face Elena Egoshina of Russia in the semifinals on Friday.

Williams, a three-time World silver medalist, is competing in her seventh World Championships.

Bacher edged Doris Blind of France, 4-3 in the first round, then pinned Lene Barlie of Norway in 1:57 in the second round. Bacher will battle Zhang Qing of China in the semifinals.

Bacher was ninth in the 1995 World Championships and fourth in the 1996 World Championships at 154 pounds.

Also unbeaten after the first day is Lauren Wolfe (Okemos Mich./ Michigan WC) at 136.5 pounds, who has reached the quarterfinals in her weight class.

Wolfe opened the tournament with a bang, defeating three-time World Champion Nikola Hartman of Austria, 4-2. She followed up with a 9-4 decision over Celia Durham of Australia. Wolfe will face 1992 World Champion Wendy Yzaguirre of Venezuela in the quarterfinals.

Wolfe was fifth in the 1995 World Championships and eighth in the 1996 World Championships, competing at 143 pounds.

A pair of U.S. wrestlers were defeated twice and have been eliminated from the competition: Afsoon Roshanzamir (Davis, Calif.) at 101.25 pounds and Stephanie Murata (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 123.25 pounds.
