Etu qualifies for the gold-medal finals at the Cadet World Greco-Roman Championships in Maribor, SloveniaJoshua Etu of Queensbury, N.Y. has qualified for the gold-medal finals of the Cadet World Greco-Roman Championships at the University Sports Hall in Maribor, Slovenia. The Cadet World Championships feature the best athletes in the world between 14-16 years old.
Etu won his first four matches, all by pin, to advance to the finals at 95 kg (209 pounds). He will battle Adem Tasci of Turkey in the championship match on Sunday, July 13.
Etu opened the competition with a pair of pins on Friday, July 11, stopping Nikolai Gaidouk of Belarus in 1:15 and pinning Kumar Satish of India in 1:00.
He won both of his bouts on Saturday, July 12, pin Robert Benko of Yugoslavia, in 1:19 in the quarterfinals and pinning Victor Shostak of Ukraine in 23 seconds in the semifinals.
This is the second straight year that Etu has qualified for the U.S. Cadet World Greco-Roman team. Etu recently completed his sophomore season for Queensbury High School. He is a member of the ATWA club.
He won both the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles at the Cadet World Team Trials in Evanston, Ill., April 11-13, but chose to compete in Greco-Roman at the World Championships.
The competition began on Thursday, July 10, and will conclude on Sunday, July 13. Etu is the only U.S. wrestler who remains in the tournament. None of the other nine U.S. wrestlers entered in the tournament were able to qualify for the medal competition.
The top performance by a U.S. wrestler other than Etu was turned in by George Kirgan of Granite City, Ill. at 83 kg (182.5 lbs.), who had a 3-2 record. Kirgan won his first two matches, but was beaten by Borislavov Petkov of Bulgaria, 3-1 in overtime. After pinning Patrik Andersson of Sweden in 1:13 in the consolation rounds, he was eliminated in a 6-1 loss to Andrei Tikhanov of Russia.
Four other U.S. wrestlers won a match during the competition: Kelly Pederson of Becker, Minn. (92.5 pounds), Chris Fleeger of Williamsport, Pa. (105.5 pounds), Marcus Levesseur of Minneapolis, Minn. (114.5 pounds) and Adam Hermann of Champlin, Minn. (167.25 pounds)
The head coach of the U.S. Cadet World Greco-Roman team is Morrie Geselter of Deerfield, Ill. and the assistant coach is four-time Greco-Roman Olympian Mark Fuller of Provo, Utah.
