LINDLAND AND GARDNER WIN GOLD MEDALS AT THE PYTLASINSKI GRAND PRIX IN POZNAN, POLAND, AUG. 9-10Two U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers won gold medals, Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds and Rulon Gardner (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 275.5 pounds, at the Pytlasinski Grand Prix in Poznan, Poland, Aug. 9-10.
This is a top international competition each year, and is an annual tuneup event for the World Championships. The 1997 Greco-Roman World Championships will be held in Wroclaw, Poland, Sept. 8-13.
Lindland won four matches on the way to the title, including a 3-0 decision over Dawid Manukian of Ukraine in the gold-medal match. A key win for Lindland was his 9-8 decision over Andrej Batura of Belarus in the semifinals.
Gardner had three straight wins in the tournament, including an impressive 5-0 decision over Serguei Silicz of Belarus in the finals. In the semifinals, Gardner scored a 2-1 overtime win over Petro Kotok of Ukraine, who was fourth in the 1996 Olympic Games.
Both Lindland and Gardner were 1995 World Cup champions, and will be wrestling in their first World Championships this year. They were teammates at the Univ. of Nebraska.
James Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) won a bronze medal at 127.75 pounds. He had an impressive 5-1 record in the tournament, including a 4-0 decision over Grzegorz Piorowski of Poland in the bronze-medal bout. Gruenwald, a USOTC resident athlete, was second in the 1997 U.S. Nationals and World Team Trials to Olympic silver medalist Dennis Hall.
Three other U.S. wrestlers placed in the top 10 of their weight classes.
1996 Olympian David Zuniga (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm) was fifth at 138.75 pounds. Two-time Olympian Dan Henderson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) was seventh at 187.25 pounds. 1997 U.S. Nationals champion Chris Saba (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) was ninth at 152 pounds.
The United States, competing with just seven athletes, placed fifth in a very competitive team race. The host Poland team won the title with 84.5 points, followed by Belarus with 77.5 points. Germany placed third and Ukraine was fourth.
The U.S. team was coached by 1997 U.S. World team head coach Dan Chandler of Minneapolis, Minn., and assistant coach Rob Hermann of Pensacola, Fla., with assistance from National Greco-Roman coach Steve Fraser of Colorado Springs, Colo.
