Justin Ruiz (Salt Lake City, Utah/Elite) at 90 kg/198 lbs., Lance Weber, (Des Plaines, Ill./Wildcat WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Cory Posey, ,(Westfield, N.J./NYAC) at 70 kg/154 lbs. and Brad Vering, (Howells, Neb./Husker WC) at 83 kg/182.5 lbs. remain in contention for a bronze medal after the second day of competition at the 1997 Junior World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships in Turku, Finland.The Junior World Championships feature the best wrestlers in the world between 17-20 years of age.
Ruiz, who claimed a double title at the 1997 Junior Nationals at 191.5 pounds, has a 3-1 record after two days of competition. Ruiz, who was part of the first group of wrestlers, claimed a pair of overtime wins on Thursday. In his first match he scored a 3-2 overtime decision over defending Junior World Champion Mirko Englich of Germany at 6:12. In his next match he defeated Michael Caso of Cuba 3-1 at 7:59. Ruiz will now face Lajos Virac of Hungary.
Weber, who will be attending Northern Illinois Univ. this fall, posted a 1-1 record on the first day of competition. Weber, wrestling as part of group two, lost a 7-0 decision to Gurbinder Singh of India in the first round. In the second round Weber rebounded to score a 7-1 decision over Alik Isaev of Kyrgyzstan. On Friday Weber will face Alexander Khudish of Israel.
Posey, who competes for Michigan State Univ., posted a 2-1 record on the first day and is still eligible for a bronze medal. In his first match he scored a 11-1 technical fall over Javier Flor of Spain in 4:01. In the second round he dropped a 3-1 decision to Lide Bao of China. He rebounded to win his third match with a 3-1 overtime win over Masanori Oi of Japan in 5:42. Posey will now face Theodoros Voltsidis of Greece on Friday.
Vering, the outstanding wrestler at the 1997 Espoir Nationals in Greco-Roman, holds a 1-1 record after his first day of competition. He opened up the tournament with a tough 4-2 overtime loss to David Millien of France in 5:47. Vering then claimed his first win of the championships with a 3-2 referees decision over Mojtsba Shirmardi of Iran at 8:00. Vering's next opponent is Henry Padtashvicy of Israel on Friday.
Two wrestlers from group two were eliminated from the tournament on Thursday, Brady Jones (Salt Lake City, Utah/Sundance) at 52 kg/114.5 lbs. and Dave Clymer, (Hastings, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 115 kg/253 lbs.
Jones, who placed eighth in the U.S. Greco-Roman National Championships, was eliminated from further competition after dropping two matches. In the first round Jones lost a 6-0 decision to Vasile Nicoliei of Romania. In the second round he lost by technical fall to Maxim Vorobiev of Belarus, 11-0 in 2:29.
Clymer, who attends North Dakota State Univ., was also eliminated on Thursday with two losses. In the first round he lost by technical fall to David Soldadze of the Ukraine, 10-0 in 1:10. In the second round he lost a 3-0 decision to Nico Schmidt of Germany.
Three wrestlers from the first group of athletes were eliminated on Wednesday, Darnell Lollis (Harvey, Ill./Twisters) at 56 kg/123.25 lbs., Luis Blanco, (San Bernadino, Calif./Cyclone) at 65 kg/143 lbs. and Tom Ciezki, (Evergreen Park, Ill./Wildcat WC) at 76 kg/167.25 lbs.
The athletes qualified for the World Team by winning the 1997 Espoir Nationals at Purdue University, May 16-17.
The head coach of the Junior Greco-Roman World Team is Tony Thomas (Columbus, Ga.) and the assistant coach is Vern Zellner (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.). Thomas is the former head coach of the All-Army wrestling team.
