Justin Ruiz (Salt Lake City, Utah/Elite) placed sixth at 90 kg./198 lbs., the top individual performance for the United States at the 1997 Junior World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships in Turku, Finland.The Junior World Championships feature the best wrestlers in the world between 17-20 years of age.
Ruiz, who claimed a double title at the 1997 Junior Nationals at 191.5 pounds, finished the tournament with a 3-3 record. Ruiz, who was part of the first group of wrestlers, lost two matches on Friday. In the consolation semi-finals he lost by fall to Dmitri Lissoun of Belarus in 0:18. In the fifth place match he was defeated 9-1 by Lajos Virac of Hungary.
The final three wrestlers from the second group were eliminated from the tournament on Friday. Lance Weber (Des Plaines, Ill.) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Cory Posey, (Westfield, N.J./NYAC) at 70 kg/154 lbs. and Brad Vering, Howells, Neb. at 83 kg/182.5 lbs.
Weber, who will be attending Northern Illinois Univ. this fall, lost his second match by tech. fall to Alexander Khudish of Israel, 11-0 in 1:45. Weber finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.
Posey, who competes for Michigan State Univ., lost a 6-3 overtime decision to Theodoros Voltsidis of Greece in 5:29. Posey finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
Vering, the outstanding wrestler at the 1997 Espoir Nationals in Greco-Roman, was eliminated Friday by a 2-1 overtime referees decision to Henry Padtashvicy of Israel at 8:00. Vering posted a 1-2 record in the tournament.
Two wrestlers from group two were eliminated from the tournament on Thursday, Brady Jones (Salt Lake City, Utah/Sundance) at 52 kg/114.5 lbs. and Dave Clymer, (Hastings, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 115 kg/253 lbs.
Three wrestlers from the first group of athletes were eliminated on Wednesday, Darnell Lollis (Harvey, Ill./Twisters) at 56 kg/123.25 lbs., Luis Blanco, (San Bernadino, Calif./Cyclone) at 65 kg/143 lbs. and Tom Ciezki, (Evergreen Park, Ill./Wildcat WC) at 76 kg/167.25 lbs.
The 1997 Junior Greco-Roman World Championships finish on Saturday, August 16 with the medal matches for the second group.
The athletes qualified for the World Team by winning the 1997 Espoir Nationals at Purdue University, May 16-17.
The head coach of the Junior Greco-Roman World Team is Tony Thomas (Columbus, Ga.) and the assistant coach is Vern Zellner (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.). Thomas is the former head coach of the All-Army wrestling team.
