The U.S. Greco-Roman World Team will be competing in the 1997 Greco-Roman World Championships, in Wraclaw, Poland, Sept. 10-13. 

Headlining the 1997 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team is 1996 Olympic silver medalist Dennis Hall (Stevens Point, Wis./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/127.75 lbs.

Hall, the 1995 World Champion, will be representing the United States at the World Championships for the fourth straight year. Hall, a World bronze medalist in 1994, will be looking to win a medal in his fourth consecutive World Championships.

Other notable members of the team include 1996 Olympians David Zuniga (New Brighton, Minn./Minn. Storm) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Dan Henderson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 85 kg/187.25 lbs.

Zuniga, who placed 10th in the Olympics, will be competing in his third World Championships. Zuniga's best finish was in 1994 when he placed fourth.

Henderson, a two-time Olympian, will be competing in his second World Championships. He was a member of the 1994 World Team but did not place.

Another veteran team member is Randy Couture (Corvallis, Ore./Sunkist Kids) at 97 kg/213.75 lbs.

Couture, a three-time national champion, will be competing in his fourth World Championships. He last competed in the 1995 World Championships.

Competing in their first World Championships are Broderick Lee (Portland, Ore./Peninsula WC) at 54 kg/119 lbs., Chris Saba (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 69 kg/152 lbs., Matt Lindland, (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. and Rulon Gardner, (Mesa, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 130 kg/286 lbs.

Lee, the 1997 national champion, defeated seven-time U.S. World Team member Shawn Sheldon to secure a spot on his first World Team.

Saba, a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, makes his first appearance at the World Championships. Saba is also the 1997 national champion.

Lindland, a 1996 World Cup Champion, recently claimed a gold medal at the Pytlasinski Grand Prix Tournament in Poznan, Poland. The Grand Prix is a top international competition and is used by many countries as a tuneup for the World Championships.

Gardner, also a 1996 World Cup Champion, will compete for the first time at the World Championships. Gardner joined Lindland in winning a gold medal at the Pytlasinski Grand Prix Tournament in early August.

The U.S. is a rising power in the world of Greco-Roman wrestling, claiming three silver medals at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. The U.S. tied for fourth place as a team in the 1995 World Championships.

The U.S. Greco-Roman Team will be under the direction of head coach Dan Chandler (Minneapolis, Minn.), assistant coach Rob Hermann (Pensacola, Fla.) and National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
