Univ. of Minnesota-Morris women's team win historic dual meet

The University of Minnesota-Morris women's wrestling team made history by being the first women's collegiate team to compete in a dual meet against international competition. 

The Minnesota-Morris team defeated a combined national team from Norway and Denmark 21-19 in Meadville, Pa., Oct. 17. The dual meet was arranged as both teams were competing in the Keystone Open in Meadville, Pa. over the weekend.

The combined team of Norway and Denmark jumped out to an early 18-2 lead after gaining victories in the first five matches. UM-Morris rebounded to win the last five matches in convincing fashion to win the dual meet.

Claiming victories for UM-Morris were Tina George (South Euclid, Ohio/UM-Morris) and Amiee McNab (Malone, Wis./UM-Morris) at 123.25 lbs., Kristy Jeffrey (Deland, Fla./UM-Morris) at 149.75 lbs. plus Nina Vernon (Rodeo, Calif./UM-Morris) and Dominique Smalley (Iowa City, Iowa/UM-Morris) winning at 165.25 lbs.

George scored the first win for UM-Morris with a pin over Janne Folde of Denmark in 3:37. George, who placed seventh in the U.S. Nationals, was leading 7-0 when she scored the pin. Folde placed fourth in the 1996 Women's World Championships.

McNab followed with an 11-1 technical fall win over Sabine Ottegen of Denmark in just 1:53. McNab placed sixth in the 1997 U.S. Nationals at 112.25 pounds.

Jeffrey continued the win streak with a 13-1 technical fall win over Monica Jahannessen of Norway. Jeffrey, ranked third in the U.S. at 149.75 pounds, scored five takedowns and an exposure to claim the match.

Vernon, ranked fourth in the U.S. at 165.25 pounds, claimed the fourth straight win for UM-Morris with a pin over May Eriksen of Denmark in just 1:37. Vernon's win tied the meet at 18-18.

In the final match of the evening, Smalley scored an 8-3 decision over Bente Erickson of Norway to secure the 21-19 win for UM-Morris. Smalley, ranked second in the U.S. at 165.25 pounds, scored five takedowns for the win.
