KOREA DEFEATS ARIZONA STATE, 15-14, IN FREESTYLE WRESTLING DUAL MEET IN TEMPE, ARIZ., OCT. 22A Korean freestyle wrestling team, on tour in the United States, defeated the varsity wrestling team from Arizona State University, 15-14, in a dual meet at ASU's PE East Gym, Wednesday, October 22. The teams competed in freestyle wrestling, one of the styles which are contested in the Olympic Games.
Korea claimed the first four matches in the meet, but Arizona State rebounded with victories in four of the last five bouts.
Claiming the first win for Arizona State was Tracy Brown (San Jose, Calif.), who stopped Ku Yong-Pan of Korea, 4-0 at 138.75 pounds.
After another Korean win, Arizona State claimed three straight shutout victories, which reduced the final margin to just one team point.
Matt Suter (Gibbstown, N.J.), who was eighth in the 1997 NCAA Championships, defeated Aum Chang-Jun, 4-0 at 152 pounds.
Aaron Simpson (Wellton, Ariz.) followed with a 3-0 decision over Song Sae-Min at 187.25 pounds. Simpson was eighth in the 1996 NCAA Championships.
Joe Micela (Audubon, N.J.) closed the dual meet with a 5-0 win over Kim Hung-Yong at 213.75 pounds.
The Korean team is in Tempe to compete in the 1997 Sunkist Kids/ASU International Open, scheduled for October 25-26 at the University Activity Center at Arizona State.
