Keck claims double title at 1997 Winter Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Brian Keck (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) claimed titles in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions at the 1997 Winter Classic held in Colorado Springs, Colo., Saturday, Nov. 1. 

The Winter Classic, in its first year, is a new tournament for Senior-level athletes featuring competition in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling.

The tournament featured a heavy turnout of Colorado Springs athletes. In addition to U.S. Olympic Training Center Resident athletes, wrestlers from the All-Army (Fort Carson. Colo.) and All-Air Force wrestling programs based in Colorado Springs competed in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.

Keck, competing at 286 pounds, defeated Edward Mitchell (Fort Carson, Colo./Armed Forces) in both finals. In the freestyle tournament Keck scored an 11-0 technical fall win. Keck claimed the double title with a 6-0 decision over Mitchell in the Greco-Roman final. Keck, ranked fifth in Greco-Roman in the U.S., is a member of the U.S. Olympic Training Center Greco-Roman Resident Athlete Program.

Other resident athletes who claimed titles on Saturday included; Jeff Schering (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 54 kg./119 lbs., Shawn Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 58 kg./127.75 lbs., Mike Uker (Colorado Springs, Colo./Hawkeye WC) at 76 kg./167.5 lbs. and Ray Brinzer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 85 kg./187.25 lbs. in Greco-Roman. Charles Burton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) also claimed a freestyle title at 76 kg./167.5 lbs.

The list of champions also included 1997 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team members David Zuniga (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 69 kg./152 lbs. and Randy Couture (Corvallis, Ore./Sunkist Kids) at 97 kg./213.75 lbs.

Zuniga, who placed ninth in the 1996 Olympics in Greco-Roman, scored a 6-0 decision over Marcel Cooper (Quantico, Va./Armed Forces) to claim the title.

Couture, who placed ninth in the 1997 World Championships, defeated sixth ranked Dave Surofchek (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) 3-0 to claim the title.

Other champions in the freestyle competition included Jason Nurre (Ames, Iowa/Cyclone WC) at 54 kg./119 lbs. and Chris Bono (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 69 kg./152 lbs.

The women's competition featured 1997 World Team members Afsoon Roshanzamir (Davis, Calif./Sunkist Kids) and Stephanie Murata (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids).

Roshanzamir, a two-time world medalist, scored a 10-0 technical fall over Kim Avery of UM-Morris to capture the 46 kg./101.25 lb. title.

Murata, the 1997 U.S. Nationals champion, scored a 3-0 decision over Tina George (S. Euclid, Ohio/UM-Morris) to claim the title at 56 kg./123.25 lbs.

The tournament also featured some international champions. Claiming titles in the freestyle competition for Belarus were Alexander Gouzov at 58 kg./127.75 lbs., Victor Serbin at 85 kg./187.25 lbs. and Andrey Eremenko at 97 kg./213.75 lbs.

Gouzov placed seventh in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. Serbin competed in the 1997 World Championships.
