BELARUS DEFEATS U.S. TEAM, 32-19, IN A FREESTYLE WRESTLING DUAL MEET IN COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO., NOV. 6 

The national freestyle wrestling team from Belarus defeated a team of U.S. wrestlers, 32-19, in a friendly World Dual meet at Sierra High School in Colorado Springs, Colo., Nov. 6.

The U.S. team included members of the U.S. Olympic Training Center freestyle resident athlete program, based in Colorado Springs, Colo., along with other top athletes.

Belarus is one of the strongest wrestling nations in the world, placing 11th at the recent 1997 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Russia. Belarus, which is training with U.S. athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, also competed in the Winter Classic in Colorado Springs last Sunday.

Eric Albarracin (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) led the U.S. team with two wins at 119 pounds, defeating Dimitri Zachartchenko 5-3 in their first match, and 5-1 in their second match. Albarracin jumped to early leads in both matches with explosive takedowns.

Ray Brinzer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) won his match at 187.25 pounds, edging Victor Serbin, 3-2. Brinzer, who is a member of the U.S. Olympic Training Center Greco-Roman program, is also a talented freestyle wrestler.

The next U.S. win came from Sean Bormet (Madison, Wis./Dave Schultz WC), who defeated Eduard Alexeenko, 4-1, in overtime at 5:30 at 167.5 pounds. Bormet was third in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

The final U.S. win came in the last match, where Jake Sherer (Colorado Springs, Colo./unattached) scored a 0-0 overtime refereeĀ¹s decision over Andrey Eremenko. Sherer is a student at the U.S. Air Force Academy. In their first match earlier in the evening, Eremenko scored a 7-5 win over Sherer.

Belarus won eight of the 13 matches in the dual meet.
