Bulgaria wins pair of Greco-Roman Dual Meets against U.S. teams

The National Greco-Roman team from Bulgaria, featuring a number of Olympic and World stars, claimed a pair of victories in a Friendship Dual meet in Greco-Roman wrestling, Friday, Nov. 21 at Fort Carson, Colo. 

Bulgaria competed in two separate dual meets against a team of U.S. Olympic Training Center Greco-Roman resident athletes from Colorado Springs, along with a U.S. Armed Forces team including stars from the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.

The Bulgarian team is one of the best in the world, recently finishing fourth in the 1997 World Greco-Roman Championships in Wroclaw, Poland.

In the first dual of the evening, Bulgaria claimed five of the eight matches for a 20-12 win over the U.S. Olympic Resident Athlete Team (USOTC).

Leading the visiting team from Bulgaria was 1996 Olympic Champion Armen Nazarian at 127.75 pounds. Nazarian, who defeated U.S. star Brandon Paulson in the gold-medal finals at 114.5 pounds in the 1996 Olympics, claimed a 11-0 technical fall over Josh Fox of the USOTC in 2:55. Nazarian then scored a 7-0 decision over Mike Santos (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in the second dual meet.

Another star on the Bulgarian team was super heavyweight Sergei Mourieko, a bronze medalist at 286 pounds at the 1996 Olympics while competing for Moldova. Mourieko scored a 4-1 decision over Brian Keck (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) in the final match of the dual. Keck is ranked fifth in the U.S. in Greco-Roman at 286 pounds.

Claiming wins for the U.S. Olympic Training Center Team were Chris Saba (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 69 kg/152 lbs., Kevin Vogel (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. and Dave Surofchek (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) at 97 kg/213.75 lbs.

Saba, a 1997 U.S. World Team member, scored a hard fought 3-1 overtime decision over Bisser Guerguiev. Guerguiev, who placed fifth in the 1996 Olympics, is coming off a fourth place finish at the 1997 World Championships.

Vogel, the 1996 World Cup champion, stopped Hristo Stanchev with a come from behind 6-3 decision. Trailing 3-0 late in the match, Vogel hit consecutive three point throws to win the match.

Surofcheck made it back-to-back wins for the USOTC team with a 3-2 overtime decision over Alli Mollov at 213.75 pounds. Surofchek, ranked fifth in the U.S., tied up the match late in the regulation period then scored a one-point gut wrench to claim the win in overtime.

In the second dual meet of the evening, Bulgaria claimed five of the seven matches from the U.S. Armed Forces Team to win the dual meet 23-6.

Claiming victories for the Armed Forces was Herb House (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Kenny Owens (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 85 kg/187.25 lbs.

House, ranked fourth in the U.S. at 138.75 pounds, claimedthe Armed Forces first win of the meet with a 7-6 decision over Ivailo Mihailov at 138.75 pounds. House is the 1997 Armed Forces Greco-Roman champion.

Owens, ranked fifth in the U.S. at 187.25 pounds, registered the Armed Forces second win by defeating Hristo Stanchev with a 5-2 decision. Owens placed fifth in the 1997 World Military Games.

The Bulgarian team has been training with U.S. athletes in Colorado Springs throughout November at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

The Bulgarian squad was coached by Bratan Tsenov, a former World Champion and 1988 Olympic bronze medalist. Leading the USOTC resident team was USA Wrestling Resident Training Coach Anatoly Petrosyan. The Armed Forces team was coached by U.S. Army Head Coach Derrick Waldroup, a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.
