Iris Smith (Albany, Ga./UM-Morris) was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the 1997 University of Minnesota-Morris Women's Open, held in Morris, Minn., Dec. 6. 
 Smith, who is ranked third in the U.S. at 165.25 pounds, claimed top honors with a 47 second pin over second ranked Dominique Smalley (Iowa City, Iowa/UM-Morris) in the 165.25-pound finals. 
 The win marked the first time that Smith had defeated Smalley in head-to-head competition. 
 The tournament was dominated by the Univ. of Minnesota-Morris wrestlers as they claimed titles at every weight. The Univ. of Minnesota-Morris women's wrestling program, led by head coach Doug Reese, is the top women's collegiate program in the nation. 
 Nationally ranked wrestlers claiming titles were Kristy Jeffrey (Deland, Fla./UM-Morris) at 136.5 pounds and Satrininna Vernon (Rodeo, Calif./UM-Morris) at 149.75 pounds. 
 Jeffrey, ranked third in the U.S. at 149.75 pounds, secured her fourth individual title of the season with a pin over Elena Mena (St. Paul, Minn./Minn. Storm) at 1:54 in the 136.5 pound finals. 
 Vernon, ranked fourth at 165.25 pounds, claimed her third title of the season with a pin over Lisa Bethke (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan WC) at 1:21 in the 149.75 pound final. 
 Also winning titles were Beth Suppa (Ellwood City, Pa./UM-Morris) at 101.25 pounds, Jen Teske (Coon Rapids, Minn./UM-Morris) at 112.25 pounds and Tina George (South Euclid, Ohio/UM-Morris) at 123.25 pounds,  
 The tournament attracted competitors from Minnesota and Canada.
