USA defeats Slovakia, 38-23, in freestyle dual meet scrimmage in Colorado

THOMAS, MORRISON LEADS USA TO 38-23 WIN OVER SLOVAKIA, IN FREESTYLE DUAL MEET SCRIMMAGE IN COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO., JAN. 17 

Sheldon Thomas (Clarion, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) and Dean Morrison (Morgantown, W.Va./New York AC) won two matches each, leading the United States to a 38-24 victory over Slovakia in a dual meet scrimmage, Saturday, Jan. 17.

The dual meet was held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The United States won 10 of the 16 matches held.

Thomas defeated Roman Kollar in his first match, 4-1, then came back later in the dual meet to defeat Andrej Fasanek, 4-2. Thomas was a 1996 NCAA Champion for Clarion University.

In an amazing display of stamina, Morrison won two matches in a row at the end of the dual meet. Competing at his normal 187.25 pound class, Morrison stopped Radovan Valach, 3-0. Immediately following his first win, Morrison moved up to 213.75 pounds, where he defeated Peter Pecha ,4-1 in overtime. Morrison is a former NCAA champion for the Univ. of West Virginia.

Three U.S. wrestlers claimed technical fall victories in the dual meet: Kenny Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Wildcat WC) at 152 pounds, Charles Burton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 187.25 pounds and Tolly Thompson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds.

Other U.S. winners included Yero Washington (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 127.5 pounds, Chris Bollin (Weston, Mo./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds and Gerry Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 152 pounds.
