MCILRAVY WINS GOLD MEDAL AT YARYGIN TOURNAMENT IN RUSSIA; SHARRATT CLAIMS SILVER AND STEINER TAKES BRONZELincoln McIlravy (Iowa City, Iowa/Gateway 2000 WC) claimed a gold medal at 152 pounds at the Ivan Yarygin Tournament in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, Jan. 30-Feb. 1.
The Ivan Yarygin Tournament is considered one of the most challenging international competitions of the year, featuring top athletes from world power Russia and many of the other former republics of the Soviet Union.
McIlravy won five matches on the way to the title, including a 4-1 decision over Velikhan Alakverdiev of Russia in the gold-medal finals. McIlravy allowed only one point during the entire tournament.
It was the first Yarygin Tournament title for McIlravy, who placed third in this event in 1996. McIlravy was a member of the 1997 U.S. World Team, and is the reigning U.S. Nationals champion. He was a three-time NCAA champion at the University of Iowa.
Also winning medals for the United States were Joel Sharratt (Bethlehem, Pa./Dave Schultz WC), who claimed a silver medal at 213.75 pounds, and Troy Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel), who won a bronze medal at 138.75 pounds.
Sharratt won his first three matches to qualify for the gold-medal finals, where he was defeated by veteran Sergei Kovalevski of Russia, 3-2. A key victory was his 3-0 semifinal decision over Alexander Shemarov of Russia.
Steiner had a 5-1 record in the tournament, including a 5-1 victory over Shamil Umalatov of Russia in the bronze-medal match. His only loss was a 6-3 decision to Zelimkhan Akhmadov of Russia in the third round.
Both Sharratt and Steiner are former NCAA champions for the University of Iowa. Sharratt is currently an assistant coach at Lehigh Univ., while Steiner is an assistant coach at the Univ. of Wisconsin.
Placing fourth for the U.S. at 286 pounds was Tolly Thompson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids). Thompson won his first two matches, then was defeated in the semifinals by two-time World Cup champion Andrei Shumilin of Russia, 4-1. After another win, Thompson fell in the bronze medal match to Akhmed Aidin Polatchi of Turkey, 8-6.
The U.S. team was coached by 1976 Olympic Champion John Peterson of Comstock, Wis., and USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett of Colorado Springs, Colo.
The tournament is named in the honor of former World and Olympic champion Ivan Yarygin, a wrestling legend in Russia. Yarygin, who was president of the Russian Wrestling Federation, was killed in an automobile accident last fall.
