 HENDERSON WINS SILVER MEDAL AT VEHBI EMRI TOURNAMENT IN TURKEY, FEB. 6-8; LINDLAND TAKES BRONZE MEDAL 

Dan Henderson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) claimed a silver medal at the Vehbi Emre Tournament of Greco-Roman wrestling, held in Izmir, Turkey, Feb. 6-8.

Henderson, a two-time Olympian, won three straight matches to qualify for the gold-medal finals. He was defeated in the finals by Kurm Gaber of Egypt, 2-0 in overtime.

A key victory came in the second round, where Henderson scored an injury default win over veteran Igor Bugay of Ukraine. Henderson led 2-0 at the time.

Claiming a bronze medal for the United States was Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds. Lindland had an impressive 4-1 record in the tournament.

In the bronze-medal match, Lindland stopped Muttalip Yerlikaya of Turkey, 4-0. Lindland's only loss came in the third round, when he lost a 1-1 referee's decision to Namzi Avluca of Turkey, who went on to claim the gold medal.

Lindland is the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class in the United States, and was a 1996 World Cup champion.

Two U.S. wrestlers placed fourth in the tournament, Kevin Bracken (Dekalb, Ill./New York AC) at 138.75 pounds and Tod Giles (Nanuet, N.Y./New York AC) at 187.25 pounds. Both had 2-2 records in the meet.

Bracken was defeated in the bronze-medal match by Kois Haigandu of Kazakhstan, 4-0. Giles was defeated by default in the bronze medal bout by Serkan Ozden of Turkey.

The U.S. team was coached by Joe DeMeo of Niskayuna, N.Y. and Pavel Katsen of Brooklyn, N.Y., along with National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser of Colorado Springs, Colo.
