WILLIAMS WINS GOLD MEDAL AT POLISH WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL, ROSHANZAMIR TAKES SILVER MEDAL AND VERNON WINS A BRONZE, LEADING USA TO A SECOND PLACE FINISH ON FEB. 14Shannon Williams (Simi Valley, Calif./Sunkist Kids) claimed a gold medal at 112.25 pounds, the top U.S. performance at Polish Women's International Open in Warsaw, Poland, Feb. 14.
Afsoon Roshanzamir (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) claimed a silver medal at 101.25 pounds and Satrinina Vernon (Fairfield, Calif./UM-Morris) won a bronze medal at 149.75 pounds.
The United States placed a strong second in the team standings with 101 points, behind team champion France with 116 points. Japan, the defending World champion team, placed third with 70 points. A total of 32 teams from 13 nations entered the tournament.
Williams won four straight matches to claim the gold medal, including a 6-0 decision over Celine Menu of France in the championship finals. Her closest match came in the second round, when she beat Anne Delunsch of France in a 2-2 referee's decision. Williams is a four-time World silver medalist.
Roshanzamir lost in the gold medal finals by pin to Yuki Umeda of Japan. Roshanzamir won three straight matches to qualify for the championship finals. Roshanzamir is a two-time World medalist.
Vernon lost her first match to Elvira Barriea of Austria, 4-1, then rebounded with four straight wins to claim the bronze medal. She avenged her loss with a 1-1 referee's decision over Barriea in the third-place match.
Two U.S. wrestlers placed fifth in their weight classes: Stephanie Murata (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 123.25 pounds and Dominique Smalley (Iowa City, Iowa/UM-Morris) at 165.25 pounds. Murata had a 5-2 record in the meet, and Smalley had a 3-2 record.
Treeva Cohee (Omaha, Neb./Edmonson Youth YMCA) placed seventh at 123.25 pounds with a 3-2 record. It was Cohee's first competition since she had a kidney transplant last fall.
