Berube, a 1996 World silver medalist, scored a 3-0 decision over Ida Hellstrom of Sweden to claim the gold medal at 112.25 pound. Berube is currently ranked third in the U.S. at 123.25 pounds. Hellstrom placed eight in the 1997 Women's World Championships at 112.25 pounds.
Stenglein, a World silver medalist in 1996 & 1997, won the 165.25 pound title with a 3-2 decision over Helene Karlsson of Sweden.
Other top finishers for the U.S. included Malissa Sherwood (Granite Bay, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) who placed fifth at 112.25 pounds and Lauren Wolfe (Okemos, Mich./Michigan WC) who finished sixth at 136.5 pounds.
Sherwood, ranked third in the U.S. at 112.25 pounds, scored a 4-3 decision over Anna Holk of Sweden to claim fifth place.
Wolfe, who is top-ranked in the U.S. at 136.5 pounds, lost by fall to Anita Schatzle of Germany in the fifth place match. Wolfe placed fifth in the 1997 Women's World Championships.
Other athletes who competed for the U.S. were Angela Hessner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Minn-Morris) at 46 kg/101.25 lbs., and Kristy Jeffrey (Deland, Fla./Minn-Morris) at 62 kg/136.5 lbs.
The U.S. placed sixth among 14 countries in the tournament.
The U.S. team was coached by Doug Reese of Morris, Minn. Reese, the head coach of the University of Minnesota-Morris wrestling program, is the assistant coach for the 1998 U.S. Women's World Team.
