MARIANETTI, ERIKSON WIN SILVER MEDALS AT KIEV GRAND PRIX IN UKRAINE; HENSON, BORMET CLAIM BRONZE MEDALS 

Steve Marianetti (Champaign, Ill.,/New York AC) and Tom Erikson (W. Lafayette, Ind./Sunkist Kids) claimed silver medals at the Kiev Grand Prix of freestyle wrestling in Kiev, Ukraine, Feb. 21-22.

Marianetti placed second at 76 kg/167.5 lbs., losing to veteran Ruslan Khichagov of Uzbekistan in the finals, 4-3. Marianetti, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the United States in his weight class, had a 4-1 record in the tournament. He defeated Tamzor Tembatov of Ukraine, 5-4 in the semifinals.

Erikson was defeated in the finals at 130 kg/286 lbs. by 1996 Olympic silver medalist Alexei Medvedev of Belarus in a 0-0 overtime referee's decision. Erikson, who placed fourth in the 1997 World Championships, pinned his first two opponents in the tournament.

A pair of U.S. athletes claimed bronze medals: Sam Henson (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 54 kg/119 lbs. and Sean Bormet (Madison, Wis./Dave Schultz WC) at 76 kg/167.5 lbs.

Henson had an impressive 5-1 record in the tournament. His only loss was to 1996 Olympic silver medalist Namik Abdullayev of Azerbaijan, 3-2. Henson beat 1988 Olympic bronze medalist Vladimir Toguzov of Ukraine in the second round, 3-0.

Henson, who holds a No. 2 ranking in the United States, defeated Dmitri Zakhartenko of Belarus, 5-1 in the bronze-medal match.

Bormet also had a 5-1 record in the tournament. He defeated veteran Kullo Koiv of Estonia in the bronze-medal match. Bormet's only loss was to the eventual champion Ruslan Khinchagov of Uzbekistan in the semifinals, 11-1. Bormet was third in the 1996 Olympic Trials, but did not compete last year due to injury.

Three wrestlers placed fifth in their weight classes: Tony Purler (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/127.75 lbs., Terry Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel) at 69 kg/152 pounds and J.J. McGrew (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 97 kg/213.75 lbs.

1997 World silver medalist Cary Kolat (Lock Haven, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) placed seventh at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

The U.S. team was coached by Ed Giese of Lombard, Ill., and National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett of Colorado Springs, Colo.
